hi im thinking about moving to idnet from talktalk after they halved my upload speed so im waiting to hear from idnet if i can get back up to 700-800 range anyways i was wondering if they also do dynamic and how much do extra static ip addresses cost

Simon

Can't help with the technical stuff, sorry, but :welc: :karma:

I don't think they offer dynamic IPs, though.

Hi and welcome to the forum. IDNet issue a static ip address as standard and as far as I know don't offer dynamic addresses.

thxs and damn i won't beable to hope from one ip address to another to avoid access restrictions anymore but file sharing my linux iso should be easier

pctech

Why would you need to circumvent access restrictions?

Rik

Welcome to the forum, Sparkler. :welc: :karma: As has been said, all IDNet IP addresses are static, so you'd have to use a proxy to achieve your aims.

I'm only guessing here, but it may be related to the fact that some download sites (rapidshare?) restrict access to people who are not paying-members. They do allow people acessing for free but they have to wait for a set amount of time (1 hour?) before they can do another download. Maybe if you can swap your IP address you get the server to accept you as a different non-paying-member, so you can download another file without waiting whatever time is set.

Most places have fairly long leases on dynamic addresses, usually around 24 to 72 hours, so even with a dynamic IP address getting around IP based access restrictions is limited. There are other options though like a proxy or VPN.

yep also some video sites as well don't like why people use them when there are less annoying download sites available

i can swap my ip in seconds just by pressing apply on the basic settings screen and reconnecting i was also able to do it with bt when i was with them and using vista by disrupting my connection between my pc and router then performing a diagnostic on local network connection and choosing the get new ip address option

Some larger ISPs do assign a different IP on each reconnect. It depends entirely on the DHCP setup within each ISP.

QuoteBy completing this order you are agreeing to switch your calls back to BT.

this is what you get for terminating caller features so my switch over might be delayed as although the indian person on the phone said im not getting transferred i don't trust them

Rik

Move your landline to IDNet and cancel from there. You'll save money too. :)

day 4 today and still no mac and there slower than bt as i got my mac from them quickly other people have had problems with them so i might have to mention that i might have to talk to ofcom and just incase they be a pain in the ass and disconnect me i got idnet phone number saved on my pc

Adam

If you are on TalkTalk LLU then you don't need a MAC to move to IDNet (or any BT based supplier). As far as I am aware TalkTalk only offer broadband on their LLU network, so you shouldn't need a MAC.
Adam

zappaDPJ

In addition to that, since 2007 it's been a compulsory requirement that ISPs provide you with a MAC within five working days so they are sailing close to the wind regardless.

i was with tiscali before they got taken over by talktalk and needed a mac to join them so i presume i need to get one from talktalk as i never got a letter saying they were moving me to LLU and i don't think llandrindod wells is LLU enabled

Adam

If you try your number in the BT wholesale checker (linked below) it should tell you if you are LLU or not. If you are on LLU the number won't be found in the BT database.

BT Wholesale
THE BROADBAND AVAILABILITY CHECKER

For Telephone Number on Exchange LLANDRINDOD WELLS

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 7.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 6.5Mbps and 8Mbps.

The actual stable line speed supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use. This speed may change over time, to ensure line stability is maintained.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

Thank you for your interest.

Please note that postcode and address check results are indicative only. Most accurate results can be obtained from a telephone number check.

Note: If you already have a Broadband service enabled on this line and you want to switch service providers, you will need to contact both your current provider and your new provider to get your service changed over new and existing service provider to have this service transferred.

Steve

As far as I am aware whether your on LLU or BT ,IDnet will accept a MAC from TalkTalk and as previously mentioned they have five days to comply with a request otherwise Ofcom should be involved/mentioned

That confirms you are on a BT based service and will require a MAC to migrate. I would email or call TalkTalk and push them on the matter as they are obliged to provide the MAC and there is nothing stopping them from doing so.

TalkTalk uses full MPF LLU which is not supported under the MAC system. Only partial LLU and BT wholesale based services use the MAC system.
Adam

well i messaged them again and screenshot it after submitting it

Under those circumstances, what's the process to switch providers?

Rik

As Adam says, a MAC is no use to you. You'll have to do a cease and re-provide or ask for a conversion. The latter costs ~£100. In either case, you'll be without broadband for a while.

another thing my phone/internet line that i get my internet and phone from is with BT does this make a difference?

Rik

Yes, you're not on full LLU, so you can use a MAC in that case.

There are a few ways to switch from full LLU to BT; the 'best' way is for a simultaneous provide order to be placed by the receiving ISP/voice supplier. This means both services should be active around the same time, but it can be costly. Another method is to transfer your voice service back to a BT based supplier using either return to donor or the letter facilitation process, this will mean downtime for the broadband but may work out cheaper. In both cases you will probably be charged an ADSL activation fee.

To move from full LLU to full LLU is a little simpler, in theory, you should be able to place your order with the new supplier and they will arrange the migration. However some LLU suppliers require a BT line to sign up for whatever reason, in this case they will either migrate you to BT WLR first then place a full LLU order with Openreach or some require you to get back to a BT line yourself.

The whole process is really a mess and from experience often goes wrong due to the larger ISPs being mostly clueless.
