For the last four days in a row, I've received a Java update. They are coming from a legitimate source and appear to be applying correctly but four in as many days seems a bit excessive. Anyone else had this?

Last one on the Oracle site was mid-February, v6 update 24. Not had anything since then. ???

This has taken an age to fix and I probably won't know for sure until tomorrow if I have fixed it. My PC continued to try and apply an update everyday, within an hour of turning the PC on. Googling suggests I'm not alone having this issue but I could find no suggested fix short of turning off notifications for it or reinstalling it.

In the end I fired up the Java applet and tried to update it from there. It failed to download the files the first time but succeeded and installed at the second attempt. It pretty clear now it simply wasn't able to apply the update in the background or notify me of an error.

So I think I've fixed it but it leaves a few unanswered questions.

Just updated latest Java v6 update 24 from the Java applet.  No problems, WXP.

Same with me, V6 update 24

I've just noticed that I'd forgotten to install java when I installed this new O/S a few weeks ago ;D How come that hasn't caused any issues? I've just searched through PSI, CCleaner, my hard drives and I've never installed it! Ha! :D

You've obviously not used anything requiring java (such as BT speedtester)!

I was wondering how many things actually use it now. There was a time when pretty much every website had something related to java on it, but I was racking my brain trying to think of anything I've had problems with recently, but I've come up blank.

Where else is java used on the web?

A lot of online games used to use it, but I've not got a clue these days. We have several applications at work which use the java runtime though.

I use two Oracle apps at work that use it and the thinkbroadband and BT speedtester both need it.

Glenn

We have serveral apps at work that only work with older versions, install the latest version and it all goes pear shaped.

Yep so with ours too Glenn,

Lance

Here three.  ;D

We've got to the point with one of our Oracle systems that we've got to have a specific build of a specific version!

You can use a flash based TB speedtest I think, not that flash is the lesser of the two evils  ;D
Damned, if you do damned if you don't
