Firefox 4 released

well I went to download it yesterday then didnt have time so stopped the download.fired up today and it appears to have restarted the d/l and just updated itself which I wasnt going to do until things settled with it.FF never did that before always asked first.

Dont know if I like it yet.whats the orange FF button you seem to have, I dont see that

Haven't noticed much change or benefit yet but will keep trying.

I was going to try Opera as my son is using it at the moment and he seems to really like it,says much quicker than FF.Any one use it

Considering how much faster it is baz I'm surprised, you can pin tabs so say you have webmail open you can right click and pin it open and when it updates it turns blue, it is a very different beast really, it has blocked the hole where websites can read your history as well, uses a updated jave script engine, there are loads of new things that make it so much better than 3.6. On OSX it runs as a 64 bit browser as well and pretty much opens instantly and web pages load very fast, go and google all the changes in FF 4.0 and then that may help you get to play with them you can customise it to look like 3.6 if you wish as well, it also has a much better add-on manager I think. You also need to have good graphics drivers to get the full benefits of hardware acceleration as well, there is a list of cards supported on their web site.

still looking through it now.Also trying Opera and the similar feature that has to pin tabs is Tab Stacking which is far easier than FF way, and it seems better.just drag the tab you want on top of another tab and thats it, they are stacked.mouse over a stack gives you thumbnails of each page in that stack.

Opera is a good browser I just never got on with it, I prefer FF and the extensions I use. Each person has their own favourite though

I hate FF4, so I've gone back to 3.6.16. For me the claim that FF4 is six times faster than FF3 doesn't hold water.
I never thought I'd say this but IE9 beats FF4 hands down in terms of intuitive user functions.

If I get really desperate, I'll try Simon's Sea Monkey.

Really don't understand the problem, you can make FF4 look like FF3.6 just customise it, takes a few minutes that's all, it is much faster thats obvious, but I'm not using a stopwatch its fast enough for me anyway, I don't really care about milliseconds or nanoseconds for my browsing habits. Its almost exactly like the FF3.6 user interface apart from the add-on manager which is I think better. Each to their own though.

I happen to like a menu bar and the one that they have come up with in FF4 is a stumpy little affair, that bears no relation to FF3 and makes the page look imbalanced.

I agree with gizmo about the way FF4 handles tabs after a browser restart - FF3 is much better.

Glad you and Justine like FF4 though - each to their own, as you say.

I have spent a happy hour trying Firefox out and I still can't see what is supposed to make it special.

But I must admit it's nearly as good as IE9 and better than Chrome.

I've just tried to access some of my CCTV sites using Firefox but it would not let me, I have no trouble doing this with IE9 but with Firefox it will not let me download the settings/software.

sorry not read all the thread. I installed it yesterday on my macbook, and found it buggy. Was slow and kept crashing. I had no addon's installed either, so not them. Gone back to previous version

It might require ActveX or Silverlight plugins. You can get ActiveX for Firefox, but not sure about Silverlight. Some things are "Microfost/Windows/InternetExplorer" only. :/

I know in the past clients who wanted to access CCTV systems had to download IE as they would not run on others, I just assumed with all the praise heaped on ~~Foxtrot~~ I mean Firefox they had got their act together.

I've noticed this problem with a couple of older PC game trailers. This sort of thing only seems to happen until sites start supporting newer codecs, etc. Although it could purely be a browser issue, I've not seen it on sites with new videos. Like Steam, etc. Everything they've been posting seems to work, and BBC site and other news sites, etc.

I haven't really looked into why it happens as it's only happened with 2 things I've tried to look at recently.

I can access a number of the CCTV sites I have installed and require to do this as part of my contract. But I can only seem to do this with IE and a number of customers who use other browsers have had to install IE as well.

I remember a similar problem years ago when IE used to display things that were encoded on sites incorrectly, but Firefox and a couple of other browsers wouldn't load the pages as they didn't allow for dodgy coding.

Like I say, I've no idea if this is the case, but it does seem odd that some things aren't working after the update. It could be either reason really, without looking into it.
