Yes. IE has access to things other companies/software does not. Just how Macs and Windows are not compatible. Diesel and Petrol are not.
It's not a limit on the technology, nor the programmers or software. It's a limit on the contracts, patents, and ownership. Just as HP and Epson try to lock people out of the ink cartridge market, Microsoft try to lock (or have no reason to open up) their extra features in IE9.

In principle I refuse to use Silverlight. If you cannot open up your product, I don't want to use it!

Some sites are still coded for IE I noticed some CCTV sites say IE only, as I see it that's either coding for the masses and hoping you get it right, but it does assume the universe uses Windows of they are just being a bit lazy, either could be the case. Opera, Chrome and Safari all have had the same problems, as well as IE not rendering, its generally the webmasters site not the browser, but not always as has been pointed out. Indescribable Excrement IE is still I believe losing to other browsers though even though version 9 is much better, but it took a kick to get it there.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Personally, especially with commercial sites, if I encounter any that will not work properly other than with IE I send them a polite email informing them that they will not receive any business from me until such time as they stop making their product exclusive to Windows and IE users.

I don't know if it works, since I rarely re-visit after a browser failure of this nature.

Having said that, the only site I've found in the last 12 months that doesn't work is Namesco's speedtest, and this isn't s FF issue (it works fine on FF Windows) but is that they appear to have coded their site for Windows users.

Have I lost my way?

This post doesn't necessarily represent even my own opinions, let alone anyone else's

Steve

The namesco speedtest is ok on OS X

Maybe they code some sites to give the best user experience? IE is much better at handling multimedia than Firefox used to be

Rik

I thought that was a post from Den for a second, Mitch. ;D

He does talk a lot of sense.

Steve

Does that mean FF4 is now better at handling multimedia than it used to be? Or does the differing abilities relate to the performance with regard to MS proprietary multimedia extensions with which IE should I feel perform better.

Just because I don't hate MS for the sake of it and am willing to try before I reject (if I do)  >:D

Use whatever does the particular job well.

Winodws for all round stuff, Macs for art stuff, Linux for servers and the Apple Xserve for ?  ;D

Technical Ben

Oh, windows does art stuff too!

I installed IE9 before to see what it was like, as I'm off work ill. Apparently I have this lovely noro virus thing. Joy.

Anyway, on install it wanted me to turn off all my AV & anti spyware/malware protection (like that's going to happen), so I just rebooted instead. On launch the first thing I noticed was that it isn't the junk filled, bloated mess that IE8 was. I didn't get much further than that as I was a bit ill, and went back to bed.

How's that for a review? ;D

Art is not a handicraft, it is the transmission of feeling the artist has experienced.

So, in short, IE9 made you sick.  ;D

I find the opposite. IE loaded up every piece of unwanted video or music and plaster it over my screen. In Firefox I use AdBlock Plus to remove anything I don't want. :)

pctech

Can't beat getting plastered from time to time  ;D

Rik

Oh I don't know though...

MS and IE keep getting slated because they keep bringing out updates so they must be very faulty.

On that bases Firefox must be the best.

Oh wait, I have just found this.

Firefox 5 comes out on the 21st june so then it really will be the best.

Hang on, wait again.

Firefox 6 comes out on the 16th of August so now it will rule the world.

Hang on, hang on wait again.

Mike Belzner Mozila's Director of Firefox has stated that              Firefox 7 will come out in 2011                  :stars:  I think I will stay with IE9 for now,   ;D

Rather have the bugs spotted and fixed quick than long delays for MS.

Den

So why don't they correct them for version 6? It smacks of pushing some thing out even though you know it's not ready for use. If MS did this you would all be up in arms.  ;)
