Do apps purchased for the iPhone have to be purchased again for an iPad, or can they be transferred?

Also, assuming an iPad syncs with iTunes, can you have two iTunes accounts on the same PC, in order to sync two devices separately?

Yes or no, maybe even possibly. ;D

I'm sure you have to repurchase them and you can only have one account on a machine.

Stevescat

You don't have to purchase apps again for the iPad (unless there is a version written specifically for the iPad). You can sync more than one device (iPads/iPhones) with the same iTunes account.

Did not know about the first bit but think he wants multiple accounts on the same system.

Stevescat is correct if you share the account over various iOS devices then you only have to purchase the app or music once. I,ve got two iPhones, one iPod touch and one iPad which share the same account.

I'm fairly sure you can have two accounts on iTunes and log separately into each one, you can't share purchased apps and music across the accounts though.

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone, I'm touched. I must be, I'm an Idnetter ;D

Is it not complicating things having two accounts when only one account is needed to sync more than one device? I might not be understanding correctly, of course.

I'm thinking of getting an iPad for my lad, as there are specialised apps for "special needs", which may help him with communication.  Therefore, I may want to connect his iPad to my PC, but he's not going to want my stuff on his iPad, and I won't want his apps on my iPhone.

Rik

Makes sense. Could you create a new user account on the machine to fully separate the two?

Maybe, Rik, but it seems a bit of a faff just for that.  :dunno:

Even using the same account you don't have to have the same apps on each device. You can set up each device individually, but if you do want to duplicate the same app on each device you only have to pay once for it.

When the device is connected to itunes there are various tabs under these you can select which apps/music/films etc are synced to that particular device.

Simon

OK, thanks.  It sounds a bit more complex than I was hoping for, and I'm surprised you can't have multiple accounts within iTunes.

Not sure about Windows, but you can have more than one account on the same Mac (I think) but you will need to login to your computer with another profile. If I were you, I would go the other route. Set up playlists in iTunes, one for each iPad. Only sync the apps etc that each of you want. It's much easier than it sounds.

As has been said Simon, all you need to do is choose in the device menus in iTunes which apps (and ither content) sync with it. The benefit of doing it like that is that if there are any paid for apps you want on both, you only have to pay once.
