Blackberry software upgrades - hairy or not too scary?

My 6700 is SIM free but didn't risk it with a BB because it looks like RIM pushes you toward the networks for support just as MS does with preinstalled Windows and as this is uncharted territory for me and I bought it primarily to learn from a support POV and needed a working phone IO thought it best to buy it through O2.

I tend to get any support I need from forums, such as Crackberry.  I don't recall ever contacting O2 or RIM.  That said, my Storm 2 was unlocked, but they had a "golden handcuffs" deal with Vodafone at the time, so mine is Vodafone branded, as they all were in the UK.  Bit annoying really, and I hope the new ones are available unlocked, or at least, through O2.
