Hi simple question and I think Rik might be the best to answer this.

Okay a little background, a couple of weeks ago I switched ISP's to get FTTC, now my new ISP doesn't have it's own DNS servers, it recommends using Google ( yeah right

) anyways my question, even though I'm not now an IDNet BB customer, could I still use their DNS servers ?

I'm unsure whether IDNet dns are public I suspect not have you tried? I would recommend Open DNS if you don't fancy google,also Norton do a public DNS server.

Nope not tried, didn't want to cause any trouble

I used Open DNS for a couple of days and found it too slow, at the moment I'm using DNS Advantage, for me it's faster then Open DNS but not as quick as IDNets server were

There's a very simple answer to this.

Try Idnet's DNS and see what happens. It will either work and resolve IP's or it wont.

As for OpenDNS being slow I've never heard that before.

IDnet published some figures a couple of years comparing their DNS resolve times with OpenDns and found theirs to be slightly quicker, however I've not found OpenDNS to be noticeably slower

I did some checks a while ago- I found IDNet's primary to be quicker than OpenDNS's, but OpenDNS's secondary was faster than IDNet's.

Mostly I use...

Primary Norton DNS 198.153.192.1

Secondary OpenDNS 208.67.220.220

Seems to work quite well.

so it looks like I'll be sticking with DNS Advantage

DNS advantage name servers are 156.154.70.1 and 156.154.71.1. They do claim requests will be answered by the nearest server , there is one in London.

Think most ISPs prevent their DNS resolvers answering requests from outside the network otherwise the load would problably bring them down.

Thought I'd have a play with the DNS advantage servers, they appear to be pretty good. On poking around the net, as you do, I came upon this http://www.comodo.com/secure-dns/ with server addresses of 156.154.70.22
156.154.71.22

Remarkably similar to http://www.dnsadvantage.com/dnsadv using 156.154.70.1 and 156.154.71.1 servers
