It's working fine here, BB, what mail client are you using and what settings (servers/ports)?

I'm an ignoramous Rik, I use IDNet as my mail server, how do I get the information to answer the other questions?

Norton AV sometimes causes this prob. If you're running it try disabling for a few mins.
Otherwise Google on email error 454.

Thanks S, I use Avast, disabled that and it worked, so will let it restart (10 minutes) and see what happens. Thank you both for your prompt help, I can go back into the garden now and continue digging for victory!

The plot has thickened. I emailed Avast and quickly got a reply, they suggested that it was due to the security system of my emails, but there are none. So I had another thought, my Windows7 was updated last night so I restored to the previous version, the fault had gone away. I have now returned to the latest version, fault has returned. I cannot believe that I am the only peep to get this problem if it is a Microsoft problem! I think I will go back to the older version then update it whem Microsoft askes. What do the experts think?

What email client are you using?  Could the update be changing a setting, I wonder?

I'm not familiar with it, but the setup must be OK if it works with the rollback. That suggests to me that something has been changed in your security settings by the Windows update. I haven't seen a similar problem with Outlook in Win7, but I use NOD, so my instincts are that there's an issue with Avast. It might be worth going through the settings in that and see if you can spot anything that looks wrong.

To solve this prblem I wpould be quite happy to use Outlook Mail, but all I can find is Live Mail, that seems a different beast alltogether.

You cna only use Outlook Mail if you have th right version of MS office installed and not the Home/Student edition.  If you have a child or grandchild at school then go to www.software4dtudents.co.uk and you can pick up MS Office 2007 or 2010 very cheaply. :thumb:

I have now lookd into the second half of Avast's instructions, found that the Mail Shield was set for encrypted emails, which none of mine are. Reset that and it now works fine. What I cannot understan is how it has been ok for months when I have not altered anything. Oh well, the main thing is that it is fine now! Thanks one and all for your assistance.  :-*
