World of Warcraft Problems

Hi Rik and guys

Since out problems at the weekend, we have one laptop that cannot connect to World of Warcraft.  Each time my son tries to connect to the game it says "cannot connect to internet" and each time this appears in the router log as:

UPnP set event: Add portmapping from Source 192.......... (computers ip address)

My daughter on her separate laptop can connect with no problem and does not appear in the log.

Our router is the Netgear DGN1000.

Any ideas greatly appreciated as ever.

Sorry, games are not my field, but it sounds like a firewall or port-forwarding issue to me. (Someone will be along shortly to prove the first part of that sentence. ;))

Sounds like a UPNP issue, what's the OS and version and is it the only computer that's used for WOW. We've got a few forum users so you should get an answer.

Thank you.

Its Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS.  Its one of two laptops that connects to WOW.  The other is on Vista and is connecting with no problems.

NP. Sorry I can't help more directly, but I've always thought a game is a waste of a good computer. ;)

I think if your using 2 machines on WOW and you've not set the router to manually forward any ports. UPNP must not be functioning on the Win7 machine or it's being blocked by the machines firewall. There are a few UPNP testers and Internet gateway checkers on the internet but since I'm on a Mac I can't check their functionality. First step is to ensure that UPNP is enabled on router and Laptop if yes turn the firewall off on the laptop and see if this solves the problem

Also, did this problem occur immediately after applying last week's patch or was it sometime after that? There were some changes made to the nature in which the servers communicate with a client which has caused some people issues. If that is the case then I'd suggest ensuring you are running the latest network card drivers.

If not, post back and I'll see if I can help out.

My first incline would be port forwarding. At least in most cases. It's that or NAT that causes most gaming network problems. Whatever nat is...  :dunno:

Could it be the router is set to forward ports for one specific IP instead of "any" or the second IP as well?
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

I think there's been a router firmware update if I recall correctly? Was a reset done following the update?

Does the problem occur when both your Son and Daughter are trying to connect at the same time?

Just an update . . .

We had no internet at all during the day today.  Seems the problems we experienced last weekend aren't all down to the router - bought a new router today and it hasn't solved our problems!

Internet access came back tonight about 15 mins ago and my son can log into WOW OK although we don't know how long for.  Support have asked BT to investigate - they think problem is at exchange.

So its make hay while the sun shines!!  Madly surfing whilst we can.
