Tempted By FTCC

I have been a happy IDNET customer for some years now, my exchange is FTCC enabled & there is no sign of ADSL2+ at all so seriously thinking about upgrading. I have been doing a lot of searching & on other boards the BT modem seems to fail quite often. What have others found I see last year there were some concerns about the overheating.

Some of the later ones seem to be prone to overheating, and I think they now prefer them to be vertically wall-mounted (if possible) to improve the cooling.

It's not inherent in the thing- I've had mine since last August and it barely gets tepid.

My suspicion is that the quality checks have been loosened to get enough of them out of the factory, and if you're unlucky you might get a dodgy one.

When mine failed at the begining of the month, it was for a flashing DSL led, which the BT engineer said had replaced overheating issues (flashing Power led) as the main cause of failure.

I'd describe mine as quite warm. I have it sitting on end, away from other appliances. When I first had it, it was sitting on top of (or below) my router and it ran bloody hot. Too hot to comfortably touch with the back of your hand. You could literally smell the heat coming from it. Since I've separated it from the router and upended it, it runs no hotter than a Sky+ box.

Mines barely warm at best and that's been in use 24/7 for 9 months now.

I have to say that I'm getting used to FTTC speeds now.

I recently went round to a friend's house (to help fix his computer, of course) and was puzzled why the patches were taking so long to download...

It's a bit like buying a new computer, isn't it. Everything seems super-fast for a while and then we get used to it.

Hmmm, I'll have to check mine as it's in a different room than I sit in. At the moment it's laying on top of the Netgear WNR1000 routher that I bought at the time I went FTTC...but the pair of them are sitting on an old switch so there is potential for some heat build up there. I'll seperate them and make sure it's standing on end rather than laying, that should help the heat dissipate.
