Had a kind lady from BT call on Friday regarding the fact I can get a faster connection. I politely explained to her that a faster connection was physically impossible, the line is at it's limit and it's leaving the exchange at 8mb and gets to me as 2. She said that she could make it get to me at 3. I explained that it was not possible, gave her some fairly good reasoning behind the claim in that the distance to the line is too far and how basically it was just not possible.
I also told her that I wouldn't switch to BT if it was free, as I didn't fancy speaking to people in India each week. This got her back up a bit, so I justified this by saying that if I have a problem with my current ISP, I can post on their forums and generally recieve a response within the hour, regardless of the time.
I think at this point she realised she was losing the battle, and told me that if I ever QUOTE 'found my line was slow when playing videos or downloading, give us a call and we can increase the speed as we are limiting the line because you are not a customer'. The call ended.
I thought nothing of it then onwards.

But then, yesterday and today I'm playing videos on Youtube and they're stop starting, every now and again like it can't keep up. When downloading, I'm seeing 250kbps when I normally see 350kbps.

Coincidence? And what's up with my connection?

I don't know, Joel. No way should BT be limiting the line, it's not theirs to play with. Can you run a BT speed test and post the results back here, please?

Download speedachieved during the test was - 1780 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2624 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

Just did a pingtest and pinging 72 which is about twice what I would normally see. However the download/upload are consistent.

Rik

The profile is right for the sync speed. What's your d/s noise margin and attenuation?

That sync speed is about all you can expect, tbh, I don't think your line is being limited in any way other than DLM, which would apply if you were a BT customer anyway.

Strange, definitely seen a speed decrease in streaming and downloading in the past 48 hours... will have to monitor it

cheers

"limiting your line" seems to be some sort of sales speak. Not sure how accurate of a description it is.  :dunno:
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

If a BT rep said that to me, I think I'd be inclined to ask OfCom what they meant...
