I've just gone to FTTC and having suffered years of 256kb I now get 36Mb+ down and 8MB+ upload.

The process was painless. Engineer arrived at 8 on the appointed day (one of my choosing) and we were running by 0915.

Some notes that might help others.

• You will need a new router that supports PPPoE with an Ethernet style WAN connection. A plain vanilla ADSL modem won't work.
I got a Netgear WDR2000 off eBay for £3 which worked first time.

• Tell the engineer that you are with IDNET and not an Infinity customer.
Mine thought I was an Infinity customer who hadn't received his router. He used a spare from his van and it would not connect as it assumes a BT account. I said I was with IDNET, plugged my router in and it connected first time.

• The IDNET login name and password do not change and are the same as I used previously for ADSL.
I was half expecting this to change but as I had received nothing to indicate that it had, I used it and it worked.

• Get the engineer to show you the native connection speeds on his test gear.
I got 39.999  and 9.999 speeds which the engineer reckoned was perfection.

I can't fault the engineer at all who was extremely helpful, courteous and capable.

My neighbour has had the totally opposite experience with BT Infinity and despite ordering FTTC over 3 weeks ago and despite 3 visits, still doesn't have a connection. I've said I'd fill a bucket with the spare bits I am not using and drop them round. On the last visit, the engineer apparently said that they had run out of pairs to connect the service which I found to be very strange.

One useful aspect is that remote cloud backups are fast and efficient. I simply don't experience any impact while the system is backing up in the background. I can still use the net as before.

As I said... very happy so far.

You're just trying to make me jealous, aren't you. ;D I'm glad it's gone well for you.

Yay for fibre!

Though recently, at a friend's house, I was wondering why a download was taking so long on his 2MB connection  :red:

I was chatting to my postie today - he gets just 1Mb atm. I felt strangely superior.  ;D
