Hi,

For the past year I've had a rock solid connection which barely dropped below 5.5mbs, that is until the last few days, i struggle to get over 100k!!  I've done all the usual scans, filter checks and there has been no new equipment installed.

Anyone else having similar problems?

Thanks

Rich.

For the first time ever the bt speed test actuall worked for me, here are the results....

QuoteTest1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 91 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

From your BT speed test you can see that your profile has fallen to 135kbps. This explains why you are seeing low speeds. The good news is that your sync is back up to 8128kbps and assuming you don't have a low sync event, your profile will rise after three full days. Once it has risen, your fast speeds will be back.

Now, the question is what caused the low profile. Seeing that you are synced nice and high, and you haven't noticed any other problems, I would suggest that it was a one off short period of high noise. Unfortunately, these things happen and there is nothing we can do to stop it.

If you continue to see lo speeds after the three full days, I suggest running another BT speedtest and posting the results here.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Lance.  Would this high noise even be at the exchange? I've just been talking to someone on the same exchange but on BT Broadband and they're experiencing a similar problem.  However, my parents also on BT and also on the same exchange are getting regular speeds.  I'll give it a few days and repot back.

Thanks again.

Lance

It could be anywhere on your line from the exchange to your house, including internal wiring. I know BT are doing work on a number of exchanges at the moment - possibly you have been affected by this somehow.

Let us know how it is in a few days!

It's worth noting that, being on the same exchange may be a red herring. My current exchange actually is the equivalent of two exchanges in the same building, with two number ranges. The cable run is clearly different, as one line has a much better modem performance than the other.

Speed improved to 3mbps.  Crisis over.  Its times like this that makes me wonder how i coped with dial-up for 8 years.

Rik

We didn't know any better back then. :) Glad it's sorted for you.
