I keep getting failures when attempting Windows7 updates. I've tried the suggestions on Microsoft'e web site, still cannot get them to work, any suggestions please?

What is the error code in the top right of the page, assuming the problem occurs before windows updates starts installing patches?

I had one machine that wouldn't take all the patches offered two "patch Tuesdays" ago at once - I eventually got them all to install by attempting to install them one at a time; I think there was one in particular that once it was in, allowed all the others to go. Anyway, do them one at a time (if one fails, move on to the next and come back to the failures after you've tried/done all the rest) and see where that gets you.

I get no error message until after the reload, then it just says "failed". After following every bit of information from Microsoft I managed to get it to work. However looking at the updates history I find there have been a number of failures since 14/2/11. Should I obtain these updates, if so how? Or will the later updates cover those that failed?

Have they been since installed? If they were outstanding update would tell you I would have thought.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Broadback

No, not the ones that failed.

Does update say you have failed updates to install? If so install them I would say.

Update failures can also point to issues with the Automatic Updates and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service.

Try this before running Windows Update again:

Press the Windows Logo key and R
In Run, type services.msc and click OK (this brings up the services control panel)
Double-click Automatic Updates in the list and ensure Startup Type is set to Automatic (if its anything else click the box and select Automatic)
Below Service Status should read started (if its blank, the Service Control Manager cannot determine the current service state)
Click OK
Repeat with the BITS service and then reboot the system.

Try again with Windows Updates.

I've tried to do that but there is no Automatic update in the list, though there is BITS service.

Hi

I haven't forgotten but there was apparently a DNS issue at work overnight so although our DNS was restored a lot of customers were having trouble accessing sites so the phones were red hot all day.

On my list to do tomorrow for you.

In the meantime check that BITS is set to auto.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions. After reading all I could find on the subject I thought it would be worth deleting and reloading the Service Pack. That seems to have fixed it for I have received and downloaded three updates since which have installed with no errors.  :fingers:
