I gots me a problem!

As I mentioned in my other thread, my line seems to be stuck at or around around 2meg. I noticed this yesterday but could have been like it longer, I've been working away a lot recently and haven't been on much.

Anyway, I've done the usual, changed routers (twice), used the test socket with a plug in filter, phone plugged in and out, tried wired and wireless on different machines with different OS's. Stats and throughput stay exactly the same, (good) see pic.

The only thing that has changed recently is that my line rental moved from Primus to IDNet on the 27th. Can't see how that could be responsible though, it should just be a paper exercise, nothing physical.

I suspect a call to support is in order.

Edit: Still can't run a BT test to check my profile.

Yeah, it's a bit of a puzzle. Still on fast path so I doubt there has been any instability and stats are perfect, for my line anyway. I think I'm here tomorrow, I'll see what support have to say.

Well, looks like I'm outta here guys. According to James, given that my hardware isn't to blame, which it isn't, the only thing it can be is a congested VP and I have to wait for BT to upgrade the exchange! HAhaha! Like that will ever happen. So a few days ago I'm sitting on a 6.5m+ connection and today I'm stuck on a less than 2m connection and apparently that's all perfectly OK, after all I am getting more than 600kbps and I'm only paying £25.52 a month for it!

TBH I don't really care if it's BT or IDNet, all I want now is a half reasonable connection back, and quite honestly it sounds like IDNet couldn't care less.

So, to that end I'll be moving the whole lot over (BB and phone) to an LLU supplier in the very near future, actually, when I get back from Hereford on Saturday morning. Given the situation I'm in now, it doesn't even matter if I only get less than 2meg, at least I'll only be paying half the bloody price for it, or less!

Oh well, that's life, eh?

Frankly I very much doubt that's the case.  It's BT that have them over a barrel.  As Rik said on another thread, BT's attitude is, 'it work's, so where's the problem'.

What BT are looking to do is to drive the smaller independent suppliers to the wall, presumably in the hopes that they will pick up the business.  They won't they'll just drive them to LLU suppliers unless that option isn't available.

I do agree that the BT rules suck, I don't know whether things have changed but I know that Zen at least could do a bit of BRAS tweaking.

Have a look here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search which should tell you what LLU providers have kit colocated in the exchange.

Thanks, Mitch, I've had my exchange bookmarked for a couple of years now.   There are two suppliers of LLU, one of them having a few resellers.

Now, what did I do with that coin?  ;D

An update: On Monday, I rang IDNet requesting my MAC, I also emailed a request. Yesterday evening I arrived home to find my download speed has reverted to normal, despite being told that I was on a congested VP and nothing could be done.



I still haven't received my MAC from IDNet  ::)

Good I suppose that the speeds are back up, but the MAC request is what five working days. I don't recall previous issues with MAC requests with IDNet I think on some occasions they've even been given at the time of the request.

Thought I'd do a "quick" update for those interested.

I migrated my BB over to Sky LLU on the 26th of June, very painless and everything went smoothly. After the DLM had settled, I ended up with a 14meg sync and actual download rate of around 12meg. Not too bad as the ADSL MAX was 8128meg sync and downloads around 6.5meg. Upload is around 1meg from 327k on Max

The service seems quite stable and reliable, no dropouts or disconnections and speed appears constant throughout the day and evening. It's been up for the last 26 days.

I migrated my phone line over a couple of weeks later, again, it all went very smoothly with no problems. I did manage to lose about 300k in the process, due I think to the attenuation rising by 1db, not really a problem though.

The only thing I will complain about are their supplied routers  :shake: , I got through 2 before I realized they were useless. There were constant dropouts, router freezing, and port forwarding just wouldn't work properly, to mention a few of things. Again it's not really a problem, I managed to extract my username and password from the Sky router (Thanks to James on the User Forum) and slapped them into a V6 2wire. Hey Presto!, one perfectly working router and connection.  :thumb:

So I've ended up with...

14meg, unlimited download quota.
Unlimited anytime calls, with caller display
Line rental.

For £27.25 a month

Actually Sky were doing a deal on line rental at the time, but they couldn't do that over the phone, so they credited my account with £51, I haven't paid a penny yet, mustn't grumble, eh!

I'll admit I went into this with a fair amount of trepidation, but up to now it's been quite a positive experience. I do realize that could all change, but then again it can with any ISP, especially when you throw BT into the mix!

My pings from IDNet were generally around 26-30, so reasonably comparable. I do believe that Sky offer a "gaming" profile, which should reduce latency, but that's not something I'm too concerned about.
