Hi all

A while back i got a new router as my DGN2000 died a death.

Being a very busy time in my life i just connected my new billion 7800 n got it working and left it.

I think my connection is not as good as it could/should be so am looking for some advice on getting it better.

using speedtest.net i am getting a mixed bag of results, over the last couple of days I have been getting about 6-7mb DL during the day but at night it is dropping down to as low as 2mb (last night between 10 and 12), my UL has been around .36 mb during the day dropping to .2 last night. My ping seems to always test fine between 20-30 using pingtest

my stats are as follows

UP 448
DOWN 8128

SNR margin
UP 24.0
DOWN 14.5

Attenuation
UP 9.0
Down 16.0

I ran some more test before making this post, the results didn't seem to bad(see below).

Hopefully I have given enough information for the gurus that be to give an opinion on my connection, if not feel free to talk slow :red: and ask for what ever else you need

Regards

Mike

Your attenuation suggests a short line and, depending on what package you're on, you should be able to get quite a healthy download speed.

What does suggest a problem is the relatively high SNR margin. Have you tried connecting the router directer into the master/test socket?

Griff

I haven't tried the master socket, it would mean a lot of plug pulling and what not, but if you think it is a worth while exercise for diagnosis it can be done. Long term however it cannot be used as it is on a different floor to my office and my office also doubles up as my games room, for this i need to hard wire my ps3/xbox into the router.

Connecting to the test socket eliminates any internal wiring issues, so it's a necessary diagnostic exercise.  :)

By connecting to the test socket (see image below) you're disconnecting all the internal extensions and as a result removing any potential problems caused by them.

If there's a marked change in the attenuation, SNR or error rate when connected to the test socket then that's a good indicator there's a problem with the internal wiring. If all remains the same then it's fair to assume the problem lies elsewhere.

As you say it's not ideal but testing the connection via the test socket is one of the first things any ISP will ask you to do before proceeding to look into any issues.

Ok 5mins of wire pulling later,

My master socket shows the following stats

SNR
UP 25
Down 15.8

atten
Up 9.0
down 15.0

Is it feasible to leave it connected that way over the weekend?

CountDuckulla

I forgot the micro filter into the master socket , new stats are:

SNR
UP 23
DOWN 16

ATENN
UP 9
DOWN 15

CountDuckulla

It can be left this way for some of the weekend, obviously not ideal.
Forgive my ignorance but what will leaving it connected to the master socket for a period of time show?

I once had a line with a similar very low attenuation (14 db - very close to the exchange). It always synced at 8128 (on fastpath) and had the correct profile for the sync rate, however, the SNR margin never sat at the target 6db, it was always high - can't remember exact figures. This had no negative impact whatsoever or none that I ever noticed.

Best bet IMO would be to do a BT speedtest and check out your line profile first. If the profile is good, then I would leave anything else alone as your line would be performing as best it could for the package you're on (assuming ADSL Max). The fluctuations in download speed could be due to a congested speed tester or local exchange congestion. Or who knows what! :)

Steve

I think your connection to the exchange is fine, your downstream attenuation is low meaning your near to the exchange and you have a full sync. I would not worry about the downstream SNR being elevated as in fact it's not due dslam intervention but  your proximity to the exchange. Any fluctuations in speed are either due to exchange congestion or issues with your local intranet i.e wifi performance.

I have run the BT speed test with the following resuts

Download speedachieved during the test was - 4852 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps

All my tests have been done with my laptop connected wired to the router and with no other users on the connection.

If it is due to congestion at the exchange is the a way to investigate this? can anything be done regarding this ?

Steve

You can ask Idnet to check with BT whether there is any congestion evident at your local exchange, clearly you seem to have a slowdown during the peak evening hours.

I agree completely with Steve, the elevated NM is simply 'headroom' because you have such a short line and, as such, is good. The speed, otoh, suggests exchange congestion. Try and get a couple more tests done, say morning and early evening, and let support know if speeds stay slow.

I'm not convinced about the exchange congestion thing - as per my other post, I'm not getting more than 6Mbps on any single transfer day or night. Some things have just suddenly changed lately. There is something more at play... Call me a conspiracy theorist

Steve

This was at 8:32 BST normally a busy time around me. I have an 8MB adslmax connection

I'm on an aslsl max line sync at 8128 profile 7150 throughput over wifi at 5Ghz is about 6348 (as close as I can remember) my SNR is 13db and I'm on fastpath, as has been said its just headroom not an issue. Have you got the latest firmware for your routet, also what were your stats with the DGND2200? Its not the most stable of routers.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Lance

I've had no stability problems with the DGN2200.

All

I don't have any stats for the DGN2000, from memory it was stable never dropped out and the throughput seemed fine most the time.
My Billion 7800 is running the latest firmware.

I am running a series of BT speedchecks at the moment:
Yesterday at 16:30 I had one result of 4.5mb
@ 17:45 I had a result of 6.5mb
this morning @ 9:30 6.7mb

I plan on running the tests throughout today and into the evening.

As a side point : as far as i am aware i have interleaving switched off. I was happy to lose a small amount of DL speed for a more stable ping. This has never caused me a problem.

I found some information on tweeking the SNR margin here SNR Margin Tweeking , I know how to do it (although am unsure if this would help) but not what to do ???. If someone could take a moment to have a look and give me an idiots guide i would be grateful.

Regards

Mike

Rik

I'll leave that to someone who has a 7800.
