New Laptop

Hi there, I've been using IDNet for my PC internet connection for many years, and I'm very happy with the service. I'm planning to purchase a laptop in the next few weeks and would like to use my IDnet connection for this new machine. Could you advise if this is possible, is there an additional cost, and would it require installing new softward on to the laptop. I'd also like to use the laptop's wifi facilities when out and about, and would appreciate guidance on any issues I should be aware of. Apologies if this has been covered in faq's, I couldn't locate any similar questions. Many thanks for any help provided!

If your router/modem supports WiFi there should be no additional costs or software involved at all providing your laptop has WiFi capability. If you are not sure about your router, let us know the make and model and somebody will be able to advise further

[EDIT] I should add that to use your laptop away from home you would need an additional service unless you are lucky enough to find a free and unsecured network.

Cheers zappaDPJ, it's a Netgear router, DG834 v.3. I don't necessarily need to use wifi at home, but it would be handy if it's possible. Just to access the internet from the laptop would be a good start! Many thanks, and for the Karma. And thanks to Steve too! Much appreciated.

With regard use of a laptop out and about I think comments have been made in the news recently about the lack of availability of free WiFi, A 3G USB dongle is always another option

As far as I know it was only the DG834G that supports WiFi unfortunately although I'd wait until someone comes along to confirm that to be sure.

Your correct Zap the DG834 has no aerial/wifi

Yep. I'll confirm that zap, it needs to be a 'G' model, the aerial is a bit of a give-away though , the standard DG834 doesn't have any.
@doedelzak,
You could still plug your laptop into one of the spare network ports on the DG834( it has 4 ) without needing any additional software on the laptop.
