how can i tell if some one else is using it, if you know what I mean

Does your router give a list of connected devices?
You will have to look around in the router settings to find it all the routers I have used give  a list.

Check to see if there is anything in the router logs, or the option to log additional information. The printer will, of course, cause activity but it wouldn't be constant.

indeed, thats whats getting me thinking.

in the wireless settings section I have Enable Wireless Access Point ticked and Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)  ticked.have found I get a bit trouble with laptops not connecting if I untick the SSID one.But I also have an access list set up for the laptops and phones that need it so I thought this was ok.

Steve

The router surely is simply broadcasting it's presence,if it didn't broadcast occasionally any new device that was suddenly made active would not be able to find the access point.

Plus the printer will talk to the router periodically.

My router wireless led flashes every time it broadcasts it's SSID. Once a second I seem to remember. If I switch off the SSID broadcast it only flashes when there is link activity.

The wireless led on my router flashes as it broadcasts it ssid. Took some working out on this **** virgin modem/router.
