Any idea what my connection speed should be

I changed to Home Super Pro adsl2+ about 14 days ago and wonder what my expected speed should be.

Connection 306.8
Attenuation 48,5
Noise Margin 7.4 ( it was 14.8 yesterday)

Checked with BT speed checkerand it gave me a profile of 2700

So any ideas what I should be connecting at please.  Took out ring wire and put in new filters using a Netgear 2200.

On a 63db attenuation, Alf, I get a sync of ~4100k. Do you have extensions on the line, and what is connected to it other than the router? You will be in a training period, so fluctuations are inevitable as the line finds its level.

Hi Rik,  I have one extension with a filter and normal phone.  The router is connected straight to the telephone box through a filter (the old type with one connector and no faceplate). I removed the ring wire from the main box but not the extension box, should I do that?

It just seems that my speed is being restricted somewhat at the moment.

Removing the ring wire at the extension certainly could help, Alf. ADSL2+ is more sensitive to noise, due to the extra frequencies it uses, and some people have found they get a better result by being remodulated back to Max (what figures were you getting there?). Your training period should be over, but given the fluctuations in noise margin it seems possible that the line is proving unstable. Could you run Routerstats for a few days (preferably 24 hours a day) and see what is happening to that NM?

I'll rmeove the extension ring wire.  Thesnr was stable at 14.4 -15.2 since the swich over it is only in the past 12 hours it has dropped to 7.3, I have router stats running all the tme.  I did notice this morning that BT were doing some cable work just on the corner and it was probably on the run to our flat.

On Max I was getting speeds of 2000-2300 so would like to stick with adsl2.  Probably might try some better filters even.  Thanks Rik

It might be worth doing the MW radio walkabout if you have one available, Alf. There would seem to be more noise affecting your line than mine, but if BT have been working on lines, they could have done something. Does the speed stay more or less constant, with only the NM fluctuating? If so, it might be worth a word with support to see if you've been put on a banded profile.

At the moment (all of this morning) SNR has been stable and speed has been stable.  It was the same previously snr (14.8-15.1) remined stable and the speed remained stable at about 3500.  I checked with the radio a few times since the change over and have not heard any interferance on it.  Just will wait for the neext few days and see what happens, nothing worth panicking over, life's too short. ;D Just wondered if any ideas floating about and you seem to have answered most as usual.  Hope you are keeping wll Rik and not doing too much these days.

When I transferred to ADSL2+, my connection rate stayed stubbornly at its previous ADSL Max level despite router, faceplate and filter changes. I did all the usual checks and more. Eventually, I got fed up and left the router plugged into the Master Socket (with a NTE filtered faceplate) with a second filter on the phone line. My downstream SNR remained at 15 for 3 months and fell by 3 every month thereafter. I now have a downstream SNR of 2 to 4 (but mostly 3) and a downstream connection rate of 17900. I get a re-synch every 3 to 4 days. The connection rate falls by 500 and next time rises by 500. Six months on, I am pretty happy: that said, my Dear Wife does keep asking how long is the temporary arrangement going to remain temporary? I was tempted to get IDNet to call out an OR engineer as frequent re-synchs when the phone rang suggested a line fault. Reading the trials and tribulations of others, I am pleased that I didn't risk the charge.

There is an irony in all of this this. As my connection rate has risen over the 6 months, my estimated speed on the BT Wholesale Checker has fallen from 15Mbps to 13Mbps. Logically, one would have expected the converse to be true given that the estimate of speed would no longer be an estimate.

BT works in mysterious ways. :)

I've never done too much, Alf, far too lazy for that. ;)

How the hell do you get that sync speed with that attenuation,my attenuation is 57-59db and I'm luck to get 3200kbps

I have an exceptionally good pair to the exchange. ;) Be nice to BT engineers, and they are nice to you. Plus, the line was put in by a BB engineer, not a voice one. My other line, which was the original voice line, only manages 2800k.

How much did it cost you for a new line if you don't mind me asking,I wouldn't mind paying if I can get stats like that

Of course, there is no guarantee of getting a good line. I recall Rik was one of the first on his cabinet/exchange to get broadband which meant that the engineer had plenty of spare pairs to play with to find the best ones.
