Windows Live Mail problem

I'm trying to link my idnet.com email account into Windows Live Mail and seem to have halfway succeeded because I can send messages from the idnet account within Live Mail to my Hotmail address. The reverse doesn't work though - messages sent from Hotmail don't arrive in my idnet account within Live Mail.

I'm not sure whether this has anything to do with it but should I set in Properties "Log on using cleartext authentication" or "Log on using secure password authentication" or "Log on using authenticated POP (APOP)?

Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong will be most welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't use livemail, so am clutching at straws here. Can you send from your Hotmail account to another account? If you can, then your Hotmail account is set up OK, so we need to look further at your IDNet inbox. Does that receive mail OK from other sources?

Yes, within Live Mail, Hotmail account can send to my idnet.com account on Outlook Express on another computer. Sending email from another source to my idnet.com account works OK on the other computer (still Outlook Express) - it just doesn't turn up in the idnet.com inbox within Live Mail. Clicking on Send and Receive in Live Mail brings up a panel asking for my  username and password for the pop3.idnet.net server. Entering these and hitting OK causes panel to shrink and then bounce back while "Authorizing" followed by the padlock symbol appears in lower right -hand corner of Live Mail page. "Authorizing" never progresses. I get an error message too:-
Unable to send or receive messages for the Idnet (dudwell substituted) account. An incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive messages, you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this account.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90
Server Response: -ERR User unknown.
Server: 'pop3.idnet.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC92
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No

But I know I'm putting in the correct password for the idnet.com account!

Thanks Rik. At least I know I'm not alone though I'm not yet much clearer about what to do next. I should add that I've deleted account from Live Mail and re-entered it to no avail. I think I need a rest to recuperate :'(

Live Mail works fine for me with IDNet.  Some thoughts:-

Ensure "Include this account when receiving..." is ticked.

Incoming mailserver should include your full e-mail address and password.  Tick ""Remember password".

Ensure "Log on using clear text..." radio button is activated.

Ensure the Outgoing Server "My server requires authentication" is ticked and "Use same settings as incoming mail server" button is activated.

As I say, it works for me.

Thanks Arctophile. I found that all your points were already covered except the last. Even after closing down Live Mail then re-starting still no joy. "Authorizing..." never begins to advance.

I'm going to take a long break from all of this but I'd appreciate any further thoughts on how best to use idnet.com email accounts with a new computer.

Old XP laptop used Outlook Express for idnet.com accounts. I went to www.hotmail.com for Hotmail.

New laptop is Windows 7 64-bit. Mostly I use Opera. Simplicity more important than advanced features!

Can't add anything to help, but just to say that I too am using Windows Live Mail with my idnet.com email and it works fine and always has done.  Not sure where you are going wrong.

I don't have a hotmail address though and I know that by default live mail wants you to have one, but you don't have to have. Maybe that might be part of the problem?

A few further thoughts...

The incoming server should be "pop3.idnet.com" the outgoing should be "smtp.idnet.com"

The ports should be 25 for smtp outgoing and 110 for POP3 incoming.  The tick boxes for secure connections should be clear.
These should all be the default values.

Most importantly of all: check and double check your spelling - how many times have we typed a zero instead of an O, or a comma instead of a full stop?

Aah!! That did it! I had incoming server as pop3.idnet.net. Now where did I get that from? I certainly didn't invent it. Never mind, it works now. Thanks Arctophile, I'd give you a karma or three if I knew how!

Lance

The .net servers are, I think, for the .co.uk premium addresses (as well as Idnet staff).

Done! Just the one, we don't want any of that quantitative easing nonsense here do we?

Rik
