Crikey, he's not even had his funeral yet!

Steve

I'm not sure that would be riveting viewing although the book maybe worth a browse.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/10/08/jobs_funeral/

I did watch The Social Network but the actor playing Zuckerberg spoke so quick I had difficulty understanding what he was saying.

But I got the main point that has been explained elsewhere, he was an arrogant little t***

I watched a couple of Jobs' keynote speeches on Youtube, one from 1998 as he was still reviving the company and announced the iMac.

He made a comment about Microsoft's investment in Apple which seemed to indicate he was grateful for the assistance.

He also announced that it would be bundled with IE and someone made some comment and he replied 'hey I like IE and use it, I suggest you check it out'

9 years later they are making jokes at Microsoft's expense and he's dismissing developers with comments like 'just change the name, not that big of a deal'

I think the book and the film will demonstrate he became more and more arrogant as time went on.

He was a very astute businessman but I have more respect for Woz TBH as he was the engineering brains.

Steve

But I thought Steve Wozniak left Apple full time employment in 1987 , I agree he was the founder but he's been gone 24 years. I'm not sure where Apple would be today without the iPod and MS Windows Vista.

Agreed.

Jonathon Ive has been responsible for the physical design of Apple products since Jobs was back on board and I don't think he gets enough credit for that.

Steve

He's been fairly anonymous, whether now these obviously talented people will be allowed to raise their heads above the parapet who knows.

It's good to see a Brit in such a pivotal position in a company such as Apple.

As have said before, I think the products are good but somewhat overpriced over here and found the company's whole attitude which came from the top dreadful, hopefully that will change.

I do own an iPod and have bought music through iTunes I've not been able to get elsewhere.

I've been asking for a couple of years for some proper Mac technical training and it has now been granted so me and several colleagues are going to be attending a course in December which I am really looking forward to.

Rik

I wonder if they'll call the film Jobs Worth? ;D

Hopefully you won't need to wear the uniform. >:D I was looking the other day at the price of Applecare OS support and I was shocked at the cost, although it is a fairly comprehensive business orientated support package. Saying that I've no idea what MS would charge either.

The top package is a cool 41 grand. I'd laugh if it came via UPS in the same box as my Applecare has done.

Our IT staff at work (the ones I have to go to if I can't get into the network etc) all wear purple t-shirts.

There was talk of us having to wear them too, I've no issue with a uniform but after having to wear a purple school jumper and tie for 4 years, I have an issue with purple.  ;D

Are you going for the 4S, Steve?

I had a moment of madness at 0845 on the 7/10 so it should be here this Friday or there about . I see the 24 hour pre sale figures  are above the iPhone 4 level. Also I think I've found a home for the 3GS.

What's a reasonable valuation of a 3GS, in 'lived in' nick?

They do seem to retain their value, maybe 300 quid?

Steve

I thought less £100 -150 especially as the new 8GB 3GS is now £319. :dunno:

Edit O2 recycle will give me £120 unseen.

Currently I get it at Higher Ed price - works out at around £58 to cover a MacBook Pro or Air......    A pretty good deal IMHO  :)

Im not going to get the 4S. I'm still in contract on my 4 for another 7 months or so and it's not enough of a jump to make it worthwhile.

If I still used the 3GS though, I'd be getting one for sure.

I'm just holding off until it's released, as I want to be sure that we're not going to be forced to use cloud services, and that you can actually use your own custom message / alert tones, and not just those purchased from iTunes.  Once I'm certain of that, I'll most definitely be getting one.

I would be very surprised if could services are compulsory. What if you had one pay as you go or on a contract with little or no data allowance? I'm sure it will be a opt-in service. :)

I'm currently using a 3G (not 3GS) and still on iOS 3.  Must admit iCloud looks attractive for syncing calendars and address books, but that's the only thing I would wish to use it for.  I really, really, don't like the idea of Apple telling me I can pay a subscription for them to replace my ripped CDs with an iTunes equivalent....

Simon

Are you saying you can't store ripped CDs in iTunes, or on the 4S?  I have nearly 1000 tracks on my current 3GS, and all but three are from ripped CDs.

My understanding is that you can store on all your devices including iTunes, and there is then a further copy in the cloud.

No how it works is this, if you pay the subscription it will looik at what you've got and push an itunes copy to your other synced devices so your iPhone and iPad (if applicable) would get an iTunes copy pushed to them, it doesn't replace whats on your PC.

Simon

Right, so the subscription is for cloud based services, but you don't have to have them, and iTunes will still function without, as it does now, yes?
Simon.

I believe iTunes Match is an optional service and you can use iTunes as you do now yes, thats the impression I got from watching the keynote.

Sorry to get back on topic, but if anyone's not seen it Pirates of Silicon Valley is a good watch :)
Have I lost my way?

Certainly a performance leap from the 3GS . iCloud will be free for upto 5GB of data storage.

I could be completely wrong on this but I thought it wouldn't store them for free unless they were iTunes purchases.  If you wanted to store ripped CDs, you would have to pay a subscription and/or it would substitute a copy from the iTunes store.

I guess we'll find out for sure in the next couple of weeks or so.  ;D

ITunes purchases are managed by iCloud ,Music, books,Apps and photo stream do not count towards the 5GB data allowance.

iTunes Match is a subscription service to be launched in the US probably next month (no UK dates yet) it covers music not purchased with iTunes but contained in your iTunes library . It will allow you to store your entire collection in iCloud, you only need to upload what the iTunes database can't match, music plays back from iCloud at 256kbps AAC DRM free - even if your original was of lower quality.
