ADSL Link        Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1696 kbps 480 kbps
Line Attenuation    33 db 15 db
Noise Margin          1 db             6 db

Should be getting around 6mbps download, but barely hitting 1mbps. And my noise margin keeps randomly shooting up to the billions.

So what could it be this time?

Thanks

Lance

A fault?

The high noise margin will be the routers inability to report a negative value. With it at 1db on the downstream, it seems your line is doing well to hold on and not resync even lower.

My suggestion is to plug the router in the test socket and check what the stats are. If they are still roughly the same, that has pretty much eliminated your internal wiring so I would give support a call to get them to test the line.

Plugged into test socket and its now displaying this.

ADSL Link          Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1568 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 33 db          15 db
Noise Margin         5 db          6 db

Do I have to wait longer to see a change? Or is there something there that can already tell you what the problem is?

Lance

That shows a decrease in sync resulting from the connection being negotiated at a noise margin of 6db (the default value). This was expected.

Crucially though, it shows that your sync us still much lower than expected for your attenuation. I think my recommendation is to contact support and point them at this thread so they can see your stats before and after the test socket. They'll be able to test your line and advise you in the next move.

When using the phone, do you ever notice any noise on the line?

Oh and when you say should be getting 6mb downstream, what is that based on? Previous performance?

Don't have a house phone so can't comment on noise on the line. And yes I normally do regular speed tests, and when my internet is working as it should be I usually hit 6mbps download speed.
