Hey All..

Just wondering if anyone here knows about DNS?

I will explain what I want to do and hope someone can help me.

Basically I have a mail server, for sending out bulk email with no limitations, no hourly / daily rates etc & tweaked to death to make it fast at sending emails.

I have a client that owns a domain, for example this domain is called example.com ( how original?  )

I host their website & email, so example.com nameservers are pointed at my nameservers.
This gives me mail.example.com for sending email via outlook etc, the local mail server is not configured to send mass mails and I don't want it to be either.

Is there away of creating another A NAME / MX record (newsletter.example.com) and point that to my external bulk email server for the mass mail system they use?

Anyways, I hope I made it clear what I want to do  :)

You did, and I don't have a clue, Paul. ;)

Sorry can't help Paul, I know on my hosting package for email I can create a CNAME /MX record and point it where ever but it's all done via web interface.

Assuming that smtp and pop3 are both handled by the mail.example.com server and not by separate ones, then it can be done by adding an extra hostname into the MX record for the domain.

For example adding an MX record for hostname "newsletter",  FQDN mail.externalbulkemailserver.com with priority 10 would mean that any emails addressed to or from @newsletter.example.com would be delivered to the mail server mail.externalbulkemailserver.com. It would not affect any emails to/from @example.com which would still be dealt with by mail.example.com

Domainmoster have quite a good FAQ section on all domain things geeky ........  http://ifaq.domainmonster.com/dns/
