Anybody running Ubuntu 11.10?

I've got it installed and I quite like it, I think its a big improvement over the other versions.

Anyone recommend a good DVD ripping program ?

Not too sure of the new interface, a bit too simplistic and hides advanced features.

I think everything is open on Lunix though. You can change the "front end" much easier than in Windows/OSX. :)

I tend to use k9copy.

I tried Ubuntu 11.10 in a VM, and I'm one of the "Hate it" crowd when it comes to the Unity desktop. I'll be sticking with my Debian system (though I'm toying with the idea of giving Arch another go).

As for DVD - another vote for k9copy here  :thumb:

Fixed it for you! ;)

That's the main problem really. As nice as Unity and Win8 are likely to be, they will be useless if made for the wrong format! At least OSX seems to allow touch and input devices to play nicely.

I had it installed...... For about 1 hour, the unity interface is awful. Changing the interface back to Gnome wasn't working for me.

Have gone back to 11.04 (using Ubuntu classic desktop).  Much better.

I've stuck to Linux Mint for the time being. Although it is based on Ubuntu I don't think they are going down the 'unity' route.

But ICBW.

I should really give Linux Mint a go sometime. Arch Linux has messed me up way too much for me to want to do another "pacman -Syu" ever again.

My copy seems unstable. I've got Gnome as the desktop (because Unity is just hideous) and the panels at the top have shifted over to the left so the wording is not completely visible. (So where Applications should be, I've got 'lications' instead.) Sometimes the bottom one hides and windows resize from login to login. Libre Office just disappeared for no reason which is a real bother and worry. So I'm thinking seriously about ditching it in favour of SolusOS. What's the best way of proceeding? How do I save bookmarks?

Ever tried Xubuntu, based on xfce?

Technical Ben

[ah, NM, ignore this.  ]
Or I could add something constructive. I put puppy Linux on a Live CD and was amazed how smooth and fast it was. Well, for 100mb I'd expect it to be! But it was running on a 3Ghz, HT Pentium 4 and 1gb ram. :P

So, whichever flavour of Linux I go for, how should I proceed? I don't really want to install it over Ubuntu.

If you'd like to try xfce on Ubuntu, this might help:  http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/xfce

Personally, and though I've long since abandoned it in favour of the more "techy and prone to break" Arch, for a casual user I would recommend Mint (whichever desktop versions whets your whistle) every day of the week. It works out of the tin, is stable, and Clem (the head maintainer) actually listens to users. Hell, my 75 YO father managed the switch from Windows XP with barely a blink.

Yep. The only thing that does not give Ubuntu the joint first place with Mint IMO is the Amazon search. Both a waste of bandwidth, too complicated to remove for techilliterate (these are the people who download a virus because the website said "download me now!!!" sadly), unwanted intrusion and a feature no one would ever want, ask for, find useful or actually need!  :rant2:  :eyebrow:

Other than that, Ubuntu is a bit too dumbed down. There are no hardware/software settings easily available like there are in Mint. But I understand that's wanted when trying to emulate a tab/phone OS. :)
