I have since given this router another go and the telnet once again stopped working. But I have found a fix! Install the Modfs firmware which can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/apps/wordpress/modfs/.

Installation is simple! Just install the custom image on your router and then put the Modfs file on a USB flash drive and plug it into the back of your router. Restart the router and you're done! just go to 192.168.0.1:8081 and you can tweak everything from there.

The great thing about this firmware is that you can use both firmwares at the same time! The original firmware still exists at 192.168.0.1. Just keep the USB drive plugged in all the time and that's it! You can enable telnet from boot in the Modfs firmware and telnet will never be disabled. All the usual commands work!

Hope that helped!

I still don't understand why Netgear need to lock telnet!

On another note: if I don't use the Modfs firmware, my Netgear goes into a permanent non-working telnet state. I suggest other people do this to protect themselves.
