Email client configuration

I have a new computer but I'm having trouble sorting out the configuration for the email client. I know my password is correct and I can get into web mail but so far not through Evolution on my computer. I have stuck my full email address in where it seems to need it but no dice. Have I missed anything really obvious?  :dunno:  Thanks.

Have you checked POP3/IMAP are correct i.e. 'mail.idnet.com' or 'securemail.idnet.com' for POP3S/IMAPS


SMTP is 'smtp.idnet.com'


username = email address

That sorted it. Now, how do I get the emails back? Is it possible to transfer them from one email client to another and indeed from one computer to another?

Sorry, I don't know Evolution so can't suggest anything. Does the help file give you any clues?

<scratches head> Well I've tried pop3 which is what it was on previously but nowt. I've now got it using IMAP and it's better but actually since pop3 would chuck them off the IDNet server erm... Power up old machine and wrest them off that?

(I have looked at the Help menu. It didn't illuminate things on this front much that I could see.)

One possible alternative would be Mailstore:

http://www.mailstore.com/en/mailstore-home.aspx

It won't move the mail between clients, but it does give you a searchable archive.

What email client are you using on the old machine, is it still Evolution? Is it a Windows, OSX or Linux OS?

I used Seamonkey on the old machine. That was a Linux OS too. (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.)

Assuming you use the same client on the new computer. Open a file manager, go to your home folder and make sure you can view hidden files, look for a file called ".seamonkey" no quotes, notice the dot before the name. copy this to some form of media, USB stick or something. Copy this file to your new computer, overwrite or rename the file that the new install created. when you restart Seamonkey it should be configured just like your old computer, emails and all.
I use Thunderbird with multiple accounts, and it works perfectly from install to install. It should work for any linux client that creates a ".any-program" file.
