Apple will release an update to iOS 5 to fix reduced battery life problems that have affected the mobile operating system.

The iOS 5 upgrade has caused problems for many iPhone owners, with many PC Pro readers complaining of upgrade issues. Shortened battery life has been a common complaint on online forums since the upgrade last month.

"A small number of customers have reported lower-than-expected battery life on iOS 5 devices," an Apple spokesman told Reuters.

"We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks."

I have to say that IOS5 on my ageing 3GS can be quite slugish at times. I'm quite eager to see what my new 4S is like (and what colour the screen is :D).

I'm not sure if I've just got used to it, but mine seems better now.

I guess go back to a store and compare side by side again?

I've still got the 3GS to compare it with, which I'll do at some point.  It's not easy getting to the store, which is in Brighton, and parking is a nightmare.

Not really the best way to do it though, the 3GS had different contrast ratios than the retina screen which is four times higher and its an IPS screen so once again very different.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

My new phone had arrived today. I'm stuck in work as no git will cover me so I can go early! Probably being hopeful but I've got 2 hours when I get in to transfer everything over and charge it before going out!

Unless you convert music on transfer, you'll have plenty of time. Transfers are pretty quick now.

Everything done and dusted. Only quirk was Vodafone site said the micro sim was active when it wasn't, so I had to phone support, who were VERY good. I was stunned. Vodafone dedicated iphone support & good in the same sentence :o

Nothing wrong with the phone. Screen pin sharp compared to the 3GS, no yellowing at all. Not had a chance to do anything yet as I've got to get ready as I'm meeting someone in the pub in 37 minutes (and it's lashing down!). Phone was 75% charged when I got it, and now it's 100% so I'll untether it and see what the battery life is like.

Well I'm on 99% battery and have cider. Woman and mate are both late. Pair of gimps.

As the last comment inferred, I wonder how much battery the app itself uses?

I'm wondering if this problem is actually the thing that I saw on a few updates previously where I had to restore and reinstall repeatedly before it stopped happening. I don't understand how it can happen to some people and not others if everyone is using the same hardware. That being said, after the drop in their share prices after launching the 4S, it's probably damage limitation.

I have to say though, I'm much more impressed with this phone when compared to the 3GS. The 3GS seems almost like an alpha test in comparison. Everything I've tinkered with seems much better so far. I've not had a chance to look at a list of changes and test each one to compare yet, as this weekend has been utter chaos, which is an understatement to say in the least :(

You'll soon have to depend on Apple patches, and not apps when everything gets sandboxed! :(
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

Rik

Well, it's better than nicotine patches. ;)

Presumably this will be the first delta update? Also, does anyone know if the OTA updates are when connected to wifi only? If not, I can see the data networks being very (even more!) slow on release of the update.

Pretty certain they are wifi only.
