Getting near the time to change my beloved/not beloved (delete as necessary) netgear dg834gv2.
Has been switched on constantly for nearly 2 years, has not caused any problems normally BUT over the last couple of months it's dropping the server connx with the message lcp down etc. on a fairly regular basis.  I know that it might not be the netgears fault but I do feel that 2 years constant use is pushing things a little. I will keep it as a spare of course.
I will require a modem/router that is capable of receiving the newish bbc trials (something that netgear doesn't do for some reason). Cost is no prob.
Any recommendations by members gratefully received.

Speedtouch 585 v6? Also tweakable with the DMT tool.

I have a Linskys WAG200G and am happy with it.

I would agree with that, Rik, I normally use the DG834 V3, but If I want to use my Laptop on wireless I swap over to my Speedtouch 585 v6 - I've always found it to be a very good wireless router.

They are the two brands that I've had most success with, Ray, but I did notice that DSL Depot had a B-grade Draytek 2600+ for a very reasonable price. I used to use one pre-Max, and it was brilliant, but it didn't go well on my line with Max. For anyone with a good line, it's a bargain at £25.

I have been using a Talk Talk ( read Philips ) Modem/Router for the last week or so, got it £25.50 delivered from eBuyer, ( package includes a Wireless USB Dongle ). and 1GB Flash Drive to get the price over £30 so that I could get the Google £10 discount.

I have to say that I am impressed with it, I dumped the TalkTalk software and am using Philips software on it now, rock solid so far and a better wireless connection than my old(ish ) BT 2100.
Anything and everything that I post on here is purely my opinion, it ain't going to change the world, you are under no obligation to agree with me, it is purely my expressed opinion.

I would definitely recommend the Speedtouch, you can iron out all the kinks using DMT tool, keeps your connection nice and stable.

A good line would help in that respect, of course. ;)

You will have to move Rik.

Mind you having chatted to a guy yesterday who lives 100 metres from his exchange and is on Be........yes the *** gets the full 24 MB service >:( perhaps we should all find somewhere next to an unbundled exchange.

When I went through the 10 day thing last year with last ISP I was getting 36mb (yes really!) Now if my line can get that speed why didn't they offer it? Or am I talking out of my backside as usual?

It must have been unbundled, Eve. BT don't offer such a speed.

Don't know what unbundled means lol It was with AOL on their 8mb package.

Rik

How could you get 36Mbps on an 8Mbps package, Eve?

I don't know lol that's what it was during the 10 day thing then it went to almost 5 and stayed there for 3 weeks then to 1.80mb when I had the problem with my extension socket.

You can't,it was 3.6MB,someone needs to get new lenses :D

Tanzanite

Seriously, it was 36mbs! I'm not kidding.

Tiz not possible.......there is no 36MB service.
Fibre optic and the right equipment can deliver 100MB but we don't have that here.......a move to Korea is required for a reliable service of that speed.

Tanzanite

Then the speed tester must have been wrong cos it seriously did say 36mb lol My mouth dropped open.

This was last July, can't remember the place I did the speed test. It did begin with broadband so broadband place or something like that and it was tested through the AOL browser, though that should say it all lol

It's so tempting when Virgin Media has 20mb package, but heard so many bad things about them.

Dream on Eve!

:whip:

Lance

It would be impossible to get to 36mb on a BT line, using current technology (ie MAX).

Afaik, that's for cable customers only, not ADSL, Eve.

I know, I used to be with cable and already have a cable socket in my room as well as BT.

Rik

The cable side of VM seems OK, Eve, it's the ADSL side that's really bad.

It's odd some say VM broadband is hopeless but some I know in the Bournemouth/Poole area love it and say they have never had a problem, the area is operated on the original NTL (NYNEX) infrastructure they probably did better installs then.

Kheldar

i'd give up bbq's for a week if i could go back to my old blueyonder cable connection rather than this piece of string on i have now.

Tks for all replies over the last few days.
Not a particularly happy bunny re. making a decision. Usual probs of course, some people love brand X and others hate brand X.
New router technology doesn't really help either so decision made to nurse my present heap pending market movements especially where high def streaming is concerned.

Tanzanite

Just thought I'd repost a suggestion as yesterday I got a new router after hearing how someone managed another 1mg of sync speed with it. I managed to get a sync speed of 7616 with it, even though 4 other routers have all been around 5100, 4800, 3700!!
It's kept the noise margin fairly steady too unlike previous ones where it would go from 15 to -2 and anywhere in between all through the day. I have noise, crackles, echos on my line and it needs to be fixed (again!) yet this router has made me sync at a higher speed than I've ever got.

Of course everyone gets different results with different routers but this one was only £36 and if u buy it online I believe you have a 7 day distance selling cool off and could send it back if no good for you.
It's a billion 5200G. I've got good signal strength in a fairly large, very old house with lots of walls too.
