Emailing photos

I don't much care for Windows Live Mail, in particular the way that SkyDrive hijacks the sending of photos. It used to be so simple with XP and Outlook Express!

Suggestions please for a free alternative to use with an idnet.com account, bearing in mind that one recipient is a non-English speaking technophobe. I'd like the photos to appear in the email body so there's no need for him to download anything and no rubbish about "album" or "slideshow".

Any photos you email using WLM are also uploaded/copied into cloud storage via Skydrive.

Just looked up Skydrive and it applies to Windows Hotmail not the windows mail

It also integrates with each "Live" product, i.e Windows Live Mail.

I'm using WinMail which is just similar to outlook express it doesn't say anything about Live so I might have got my wires crossed here. I would never use hotmail or anything else live unless it was junk mail I was sending.

Sounds like you're using Windows Mail which is part of Vista. If so then you're fine.

Thanks everyone! The trouble with SkyDrive (an integral part of Windows Live Mail) is that it insists on doing things its way and if you try to be clever and work around it then quite likely the photo doesn't get sent.

I'll be missing for a while, playing first with Thunderbird. How I'd manage without this forum I can't imagine.

I use windows live mail to send photo's, I do NOT have a hotmail account.

To overcome your problem, don't send the photo as "a photo" under live mail, send it as a file attachment.

When you remember it we automatically upload your thought to our cloud storage. If you need to access that memory again, just remember your 74 digit pass and the 23 digit registration number. Although, currently, your storage seems rather empty...

The trouble with that sparky is that the fiendish SkyDrive recognises the attached file as a photo (because it's a .jpg?) and again imposes its way of doing things.

Haven't tried Simon as the objective is to keep emailing as simple as possible. I'm in danger of becoming utterly befuddled with experimental emails going one way or the other so I'm taking a break after which I'll focus exclusively on Thunderbird. It looks promising but I'm having problems with adding accounts to it.

With Thunderbird, you should be able to simply copy and paste photos into the body of the email you're composing.

I've tried both ways. Password for the accounts, which I've copied meticulously from the IDNet customer portal, doesn't seem to be recognised. Error message "Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.idnet.com responded: Authentication failed." And I've tried pop3.idnet.com too.

Thunderbird suggests for outgoing server accountname-smtp.idnet.com (Default) or smtp.idnet.net. Tried both, no joy. Incoming server mail.idnet.com. Other settings: Port 110 Connection security STARTTLS (but I've also tried none).

I'm satisfied that I can send and receive email, including with a photo, using Thunderbird and the first account I added (my most-used idnet.com account) which I specified as the default. Problem has now moved on to adding two less-used idnet.com accounts and getting them to work.
