If anybody is interested - this problem has now sorted itself out. 

Last Saturday the CMOS battery failed.  The machine would not boot until I manually set the date and time. (On my first attempt I managed to set the wrong date but I won't bore you with the problems that caused.)

Having replaced the battery, the machine now fires-up from hibernation purely by turning on the power.  Whatever I managed to screw-up 2.5 years ago seems to have been reset.

A bios reset. Obvious solution when trouble shooting ones own computer, but not something that is usually recommended to others.

I've had a hibernation problem that was only solved by a bios update. Thankfully it was not my fault, but the manufactures. Makes a change.

It's a lot nicer having windows boot up in 15 seconds instead of 1 and a half mins. Hope you like the new boost.

No boost to the boot time here unfortunately.  The boot time for Windoze is not too bad - most of my overall start-up time is taken by applications that I've installed; anti-virus scans and updates, anti-malware scanners etc.

The big plus is the ability to kick-off the whole process remotely using my little zapper.
