Does download quota work from the first of the month or your billing date?
My billing date is the 17th of the month and I'm on Max (30Gig)
How do I work out my monthly downloads?

Rik

It's the billing date and not easily, I'm afraid. You can keep a manual note of the daily d/l, but I don't know of a quick fix.

What you can do is to ask IDNet to move your billing date.

I see from the graph on the broadband page it started from scratch on the first of the month. I would therefore surmise the 30 gig works by callander month?

Rik

Not exactly. The accounts page shows the usage by calendar month, but the billing process looks at the usage by billing cycle. So the figures and the projection on the accounts page are only of direct use if you have a billing date of the 1st. Mine's close enough on the 2nd not to be an issue, but if you have a billing date in the middle of the month, you need to keep a manual note of d/l on a daily basis if you want to be sure of your usage.

You could download this little gem and run it.

You can set your month start etc and it will warn you if you go over a daily limit.

LOL  Got it on my desktop DB. Do you let it run all the time?
Matter of fact I think it was you who advised said prog?

Yup,let it run on all the time and it will tell you all you need to know, and more important it is a record that you can keep in case of disagreement with the usage on your bill. ;)

Does it ignore network traffic, Dorset?

Not sure Rik,I don't run my machines as a network. The help file shows this..........

56k, ADSL, Cable, T1, T3. What do all of these numbers mean? Everyone talks so freely about how fast connect to the Internet. Obvioulsy, the higher the number, the faster the connection. But are you really connected at this speed? Not necessarily. This is the connection speed to your ISP. Your download speeds may be different, depending on Internet traffic, and time of day. How can you know for sure what speed you are downloading at?
Also, there are many reasons why you might want to monitor your network activity. Watching your data transfer rates can be very enlightening as you download a web page, email, or a software application. This will give you a much better idea of how long  the operation will take. It will also let you know how efficient your Internet connection is.

This is where UtilKit DLUL Meter Free can be very useful. UtilKit DLUL Meter Free is a handy utility that  does many things, the most notable being:

·   Monitors transfer rates by showing you a graphic or text display.

·   Allows you to keep track of how much you have transferred  over a given period of time. and more...

·   The display can be in the form of a graph. The graph is updated in real-time (you can customize how often the graph is updated). This allows you to see how consistent your connection is.  You can also see quickly if your download is stalled.

·   UtilKit DLUL Meter Freehas many ways that you can customize the interface.  You can choose how often the displays are updated. You can also choose to have a sound play when your transfers get below a certain speed, or each time another xxxx bytes of data is transferred.

·   One other way that you can use UtilKit DLUL Meter Pro, is to see how often transfers are taking place without your knowledge. For instance, if you are connected, but not visiting any web sites, then there should be very minimal activity. Maybe your email program is checking for mail, but the transfer for this is almost 0. If there is extensive activity, then there may be a a site that is trying to access your computer, or you are being forced to download something. This program gives you more control over your transfers.

·   It can help you identify possible sources of network problems, ensure that you don't exceed the bandwidth limits specified by your ISP, or track down suspicious network activity characteristic of Trojan horses and hacker attacks. The program allows you to monitor all your network connections or a specific network connection (such as Ethernet or PPP) only.

·   It can also automatically disconnect all dial-up connections and shut down the system.

·   The incoming and outgoing traffic is represented on a line chart and logged , so that you can always view statistics about your daily, weekly and monthly bandwidth usage and dial-up duration.

How often does that happen. :( Thanks, Dorset, it looks like it will record LAN traffic (I suppose unless something is very clever or router-resident, it's inevitable...).

Try this then Rik....... a quick Google reveals that the UtiKit website is gone and leads me to another download site for UtiKit free.

Now look what goodies we have found here ;D ;D ;D

Loads of stuff here for everyone.

I've just d/l the app, Dorset. The first thing it wanted to do was install! :)

I'm just waiting for the lappy to boot to see if it logs LAN traffic (which I suspect it does). Back in a mo...

Later: Yes, it logs all LAN traffic just as NetMeter and DUMeter do.

It may just be worth giving CS a ring. You could ask if it is possible to change the billing period (giving you a bill for a half month iniially). I have no idea if they can do this though, but if you don't ask, you don't get!

Just to clarify: the download quota actually starts from the 1st day of the month and is independant from your billing date. But we are happy to change your billing date to be any day in the month that you prefer.

Regards
Simon

Thanks Simon.

This wants a sticky place Rik.

A sticky it will be, just as soon as I've made sure I understand it. :)

Spoke to Simon yesterday and he's changed my billing date to the 1st of the month.
Also BT had my profile set to 2000Kb/s. Within 3 hours look at the difference ;D ;D ;D
Way to go IDNet !!
I love this place and Idnet.
Getting to talk directly to people who know their business and CARE for their customers is a totaly new and freeky experience for me as mfar as ISP's is concerned.
Best ever

You'll find it's a common phenomenon. The vast majority of IDNet customers are happy people, the company provides a good and reliable service, despite BT's best efforts. Welcome to the nice warm glow that is IDNet. :)

So does this mean that we can all move our billing dates?

Was it moved forwards, or backwards?

It would be interesting to know Rik, my billing date is the 17th, I could lose 17 days or gain around 13.

As you say, it would be interesting to know. I would have thought that there would be a pro-rata charge for the period affected by the change of date, but I don't know.

My billing date mysteriously moved one month from 13th the to the 1st. Didn't ask for it to be moved and tbh didn't notice at the time. It wasn't a big issue for me and it does make things a lot more convenient.

I tend to feel it would be a lot easier all round if IDNet moved to a single billing date, with new customers paying a pro rata charge in their first month.
