IDNet settings

does any one know what the network type is from IDNet.I have been having trouble with my sons PS3 not connecting and had to put all the settings in manually and saw the only difference was the network type, in the router settings it is set as PPPoA but the PS£ has it as PPPoE.

what is the difference and which one should I be using.Cant think of any thing that may have changed it on the PS3 or router for that matter,I havent manually changed it.

The PS3 is wired in if that helps,through a switch then to the router.Using the same and then a different ethernet cable to a laptop worked,eliminating the cable..then through the switch to laptop worked too, bacj into PS3 and nothing untill I put in settings manually.It was set to auto find the settings before but would just time out.


its working now but would like to know what the PPPoA or PPPoE mean and which do I use.or more to the point which do IDNet use

You should need to put this in, this is only required if you were using the PS3 to terminate a modem connection.

Can you select a LAN connection?

thats interesting as my router shows that I do require a login it always has been set up that way.

If you select  ethernet then all the settings should be on auto, the router gives it an IP address from the DHCP server and it should pick up the dns as well

IDNet DNs = 212.69.40.3 and 212.69.36.3 if not.

this has got me thinking now, I was recently changed onto LLU so should I have changed my router settings for this.nothing was said to me whether to or not.

The PS3 connects in a very similar way to the laptop whether it it be wired or wifi (are all PS3 wifi/ mine is). The information required by both is supplied by the router and only occasionally does one have to enter any manual settings, so the change to LLU should not matter at all. I believe if you go from wifi to ethernet on the the PS3 it likes a reboot.

Hello Baz.

Just to clarify my earlier point (I was getting ready to finish work when I replied)

The ability to put in a username and password exists so that if you just have a modem rather than a modem/router the PS3 can act as a connection endpoint meaning it can respond to an authentication request from IDNet's RADIUS server.

We have already tried looking through all the settings and did as per the link above but my son has the PS3 wired but the link was for wireless.it has only been the past week or so that its not worked and thats whats confused us and the fact that really you shouldnt have to do any set up with a wired config surely, it was already set to auto for every thing just cant see whats changed.


didnt seem to be picking up the IP address so thats why we tried manually.the only change we saw was the PPPoE on PS3 and PPPoA on router.which one should I be using.

also what about in my router settings for 'do you require to log in' or whatever it is called.

If the internet connection is working the router should be fine, the PPPOE you can ignore as this setting allows you to log into a connected modem as Mitch says, the later part of the link I posted relates to ethernet settings.PPPOA btw is what the modem part of the router uses to connect you to the internet which again ignore with regard the PS3.

Can you confirm Baz that if with exactly the same cables and switch that the laptop will connect to the internet with the WiFi off.

yes laptop connects with same cable and a different cable through the switch and just direct from cable, both cables through switch to PS3 or direct to PS3 would not connect.

when you do the settings for the PS3 did you select wired, instead of wireless? Do the rest as normal but put your dns in by hand as the ps3 throws dns errors otherwise. The rest leave as they are. Basically you have to start again in the PS3 settings and set it up from scratch.
