Setting up my own domain

I've been thinking about this subject for a while.  Does anybody have any recommendations for a host and/or registrar.

The main thing that I am looking for is to maintain a permanent (personal) email address whilst retaining IDNet as my ISP.

I think I know what is involved but would one of you more knowledgable types please set out a step-by-step guide on how to do this.

I use http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ for all my domains. Maybe slightly cheaper alternatives out there but I can't fault the service from 123Reg.

I use 1&1, John. Setting up the domain and mail service is a doddle, and the system walks your through it.

It's generally advisable to use different providers for the domain registration and hosting. That said, the initial set up would be easier using the same provider and there shouldn't be any difficulties if that provider has a good track record.

Generally I use http://www.names.co.uk/ for domain registration and http://www.tsohost.co.uk/ for the hosting. If you do use go for the same provider I'd certainly recommend tsohost. They are highly affordable, very reliable and respond to any support tickets raised within minutes.

I use http://www.123-reg.co.uk as well, gives you full control over the domain.

I stay well away from 1and1, transferring a domain from them to another registrar is a joke. it took 13 days to transfer a .com domain to my 123-reg account over Christmas.

Never tried to transfer away so can't comment on that aspect.

Cancelling or transferring away from 1 and 1 can be a bit of a nightmare as their contract management tool (or the server hosting it) seems to be a bit flaky.

I moved away to a host that supported greylisting (which netcetera do) as I was getting a lot of spam, a lot of this has now disappeared so its obviously working effectively.

Another vote for 123-reg where my .me domain is registered. I host my own mail and web though on my server so can't comment on that but having full DNS control made it nice and easy to set up.
