Ever since the mail breakdown, my machine has been really sluggish on web stuff - cleared cache, cookies etc., done disc cleanup, but to no avail? Has anyone any advice for a non-tech savvy?

Lance

Hi ginger - I've split this from the mail server thread as it is unrelated and it might have been missed there.

I suggest a full virus/malware scan if not already done.

Thanks for that, Lance - full scan done and reboot but still not as fast as it was - should I do a "restore"?

Have you done a DNS cache clear?

If you are using Windows XP:

Go to Start > Run and type cmd, then click OK

At the prompt type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter

Windows should confirm that the cache has been flushed, click the X button to close the window.

If using Vista

Go to Start (Windows logo in a circle) > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click Command Prompt and left click on Run As Administrator

At the prompt type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter

Windows should confirm that the cache has been flushed, click the X button to lose the window.

Thanks for that - followed your instructions but still had probs so did a System Restore - now Firefox won't work and I'm on Chrome but it's still slow.

Simon

What's your connection speed like?  Router stats and a BT Speedtest might be useful.

i hope its gets fixed soon :(

gingergalore

Well - as i'm on wifi a speed test is not really much good to me - however, Firefox has thrown  a wobbly and I've switched to Chrome which appears to be ok now - thanks to all for your suggestions

Simon

Any chance of a BT Speedtest, to show your profile?

I will do that now :)

Download speedachieved during the test was - 362 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 100-500 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 832 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 500 Kbps

Hmmm, that's not looking too good

Simon

Doesn't does it?  Any noise on the line?  There's obviously been a problem somewhere.

No, everything seems fine. I have fired off an email to support. I noticed that the speed was sluggish. I didn't realise how sluggish it was until I did a speed test! Hopefully things will be sorted out soon.

Simon

I'm not great at the tech stuff, but I think the BT Speedtest suggests a problem between you and the exchange.  IDNet should be able to have the line tested.

I hope it's not that :) I am hoping someone tripped over a wire at the exchange! I get the same results going straight into the test socket. I shall post back here when I know what's going on. Cheers

Simon

That's a pretty good sign that the problem is BT's side.  :)

I suppose, only as long as it's the other side of the BT socket and not on my side  This brings back memories of dual channel ISDN  ::)

Lance

The profile is only 500k because of a low sync event. However, the sync seems to have recovered so the profile should follow shortly.

Thanks Lance. Although I just read that the profile can take between 3-5 days to restore. I hope not, I can barely get by on this connection. Nothing heard from support yet.

Simon

A phone call might have been quicker.  ;)

It can take that long, but we normally see bigger changes happen more quickly (sometimes within the day). It might be a stepped improvement as well, rather than straight up to 7150k.

I agree whatever happened has hopely passed and your profile should rise quite rapidly but the rate of IP profile change will slow as you approach your sync.
