Moving to the dark side..

It's something I've contemplated for a couple of months now but this afternoon I requested my MAC from Brian and placed an order with BT.

Despite a shaky start my time with Idnet has been great and I can't really fault the service I've received from them during my 18 months but my personal circumstances have changed and I'm working from home a lot more these days and for the last few months I've found it really hard to stay with my bandwidth limits.

Once the order has been officially accepted I'll be sending Simon D an email thanking him and his staff for their help and assistance during the time I've been an Idnet customer. Should any of my friends or relatives need a new ISP I'll definitely recommend Idnet to them.

It's my intention to stay on this forum and still contribute if I'm still welcome.  :)

Hopefully your line will be problem free so you don't have to use BT support!

I've contemplated the same dilemma myself Griff. The quantity vs quality equation becomes an issue for me towards the end of every month. I'll be very interested to know how you get on so don't be a stranger ;)

Cheers guys. I don't use P2P and as long as I don't need to call support I'm hoping I won't notice too much difference in the actual service but I'll definitely let you know how I get on.

I considered the same myself as I home work perhaps 85-90% of the time and have done for many years - I'm an IT Service Manager for 400 or so field sales agents, so it really doesn't matter where I physically work.

If the order isn't yet accepted ponder on it a little more first. I've been on the end of unreliable broadband in a work situation, VPN won't connect, line drops, outages all that stuff that comes with lesser services. In the end I'd now rather pay the extra for the reliable service because weighing it up against the cost of Petrol to  my nearest business LAN point, I pay for my IDNET sub in 5 days working at home and the peace of mind of knowing I don't have to drive out to get connected! Heck, even using free wifi at the pub ends up costing me a tenner in drink ;)

Once you start rationalising out the costs of failure (time, missed deadlines, stress, etc.) IDNet isn't a great price to pay. There is nothing more frustrating and depressing than not having BB available when you're a teleworker. so if you do take the shilling I really do hope it pans out for you.

Now the order has gone through I sent Simon a thank you email and received a nice reply  :)

Anton - I'm quite fortunate that I've several "backup" connections I can use in the event of an emergency. I just hope it doesn't come to that.

joe - I was down to trial "phase 2" but that's obviously not going to happen now but it shouldn't be too long before 80/20 becomes available, presumably as an upgrade option, so I'll have to wait and try it then.

Well that's certainly surprised me.

Although I hadn't lost sync, dropped PPP and still had my Idnet IP address following some advice on TBB it appears my activation had taken place and I was somehow connected to both ISPs?!?

After a quick reboot of the VDSL2 modem and a change in the PPPoE login details I've now been assigned a different IP and it appears I'm on Infinity.

It seems I may have to move as well, I'm already on the highest package which allows for 80GB monthly and It seems I'm already exceeding that. We have about 4 household users which do everything from gaming, downloading to streaming.

Looking at Plusnet FTTC it does seem their prices are extremely cheap, I'll wait and see what happens for a while.

To be honest, I've been on Infinity for several months now (not my choice but I didn't get a say in the matter), and I can honestly say that there's no peak time slowdown, and of the two problems we've had, both happened at around midnight, 1am, and both were resolved within 12 hours. It seems BT have made a better job of infinity than they made of ADSL.
