Received two emails this week (Mon & Wed) from webmaster[at]idnetters.co.uk with an empty subject line and  empty body. Just curious as to what might be generating them.

edit to change @ to [at] in email address]

Notification of your post or reply  :)

Thanks Jill,

Can't say I remember asking for replies, but nevertheless, what use is a blank email? Guess I can turn this function off in profiles.
Steve

J!ll

To show you have a reply? it's late lol so no doubt if I've got it wrong, Rik, will be here in the morning to wring my neck  :out:

Stevescat

I've turned that off. Blank emails always look suspicious to me.
Steve

J!ll

Those are quite safe, had quite a few of them  :)

Lance

The email address webmaster[at]idnetters.co.uk is perfectly safe - but as to why the emails are blank, I don't know!! Not much use are they!

Rik

If the post contains just smileys, then the email will be blank.

Rik to the rescue with the answer  ;D

He hasn't found his star yet  :D

Rik

I only found out because I have had a few, Kheldar. ;)

Thirty-five years on July 1. I think of it more as a life commitment than a life sentence. :)

I originally posted that this is caused by a reply to your post which contains only smileys. However, now I'm fully awake, I've re-read your post and the blank subject line finally caught my attention. I've never seen an email with a blank subject as well, so I'm not sure what is triggering them. Do you have any of the emails still?

J!ll

Well I get them if I ask to be notified of a reply. Rik, can you not do the same and see the blank email for yourself?  :-\

Rik

I received the email notifying me of your post, Jill. It had the topic in the subject line and your post in the message body. Had you posted with just a smiley, the message body would have been blank, but not the subject line. It's that which is puzzling me - possibly it's to do with the way we, individually, have set up our notification options?

J!ll

Mine are always blank, makes no difference if I ask to be notified after posting (here) or going to profile. Not sure if I am making sense, but I can stop them.

The rest is blank, have deleted my name though

Rik

Do you have the fourth box down checked in the notification options, Jill? It's labelled "When sending notification of a reply to a topic, send the post in the email (but please don't reply to these emails.)"

J!ll

Had just the first one, but changed it to the first two.

Rik

It's the fourth one that counts, I suspect, Jill.

J!ll

No I don't have that one ticked! am turning second one off now, getting too many notifications!

Rik

If you could try checking the fourth box please, Jill. I'm pretty sure that is what is making the difference.

Rik

Indeed. Unless you have turned off any of the notification options, this reply should trigger an email to you. In particular, you would need the third box down checked.

Got the same, blank email  :)

Rik

Possibly because I posted before you edited your profile, Jill? See what happens this time.

As far as I can see, Jill, this reply by me should trigger an email which contains both the thread topic as a subject, and the reply as the body of the email.

I've just received the following email triggered by your post:

No, they're not necessary, Inactive, but if people are receiving blank messages, I'd like to find out whether it's down to profile settings, or whether there is an issue with the forum software that needs to be looked at. I have notifications on, myself, but that's just to ensure I don't doze off. :)

Opting out completely is cheating, Jill. :) I've tried turning off the fourth checkbox, but I still get the subject correctly. I'm puzzled.  :(

I've asked Adam to take a look, Jill. I haven't found a way to receive total blanks myself, so I am wondering whether it's possibly related to the email client...

Edit: My thoughts on logging out were wrong, changes should 'take' immediately, provided the 'save settings' button is clicked.

Not sure if this is relevant Rik, but I received these blank emails in my Yahoo account, not IDNet.
Steve

Rik

It may be relevant, Steve. I've asked Adam to have a look at the thread.
