accessing 2700 settings

In the past I always typed "home" in IE but now it just googles it. I tried 192.168.1.254 but that does not work either. This is all since I started using my new computer with Windows 7 (64 bt). Help !!!!

Is it an IE setting that automatically activates a search, if a full URL isn't entered in the address bar? Have you tried http://home, Den?

I have now tried both of those in IE9 32bt & 64bt, also Firefox, chrome and Safari all to no avail. I just can't seem to find a way to access the 2700hgv any more.

Have you set the DNS servers within windows? If you have, that would be why "home" doesn't work.

You could run a tracert to anywhere and the first hop will confirm your router's ip address.

Either that or from a DOS prompt> ipconfig/all which amongst other things will list the gateway IP address. Either that or it's ipconfig /all

There's something else that affects the 'Home' thing, but I can't remember what it is!

I think it's something to do with setting it as a shortcut to 192.168.1.254

Den try doing a trace route to Idnetters, the first hop will show the IP of your 2700.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
Type tracert www.idnetters.co.uk and press enter
First hope should be homeportal and the IP will be shown in brackets
Type the IP into a browser and you will get access to its interface.

I know I had to change mine to get the 'Home' thing to work, Den, but sorry, I can't explain how I did it, and looking on Google, it seems it's different in Windows 7.

Its mighty odd as typing home works on XP and the only entry in hosts is localhost mapped of course to 127.0.0.1 and the DNS client service is disabled.

I should point out though the TCP/IP stack on the PC sees the router as the nameserver.

The DNS server built into the 2700HGV holds the redirect of "home" to it's own IP address.

However if you enter DNS servers into the Windows network adaptor properties, or set the router itself to use specific DNS servers, then the router's DNS server is bypassed and Home resolves as www.home.com as default on the DNS server that you do use.

If all else fails do a factory reset on the router which will reset the management page to 192.168.1.254

The starnge part is that it worked fine up to the other day and then it stopped in IE9 first and the Firefox/Chrome stopped the next day. The only thing that has changed are (I think) the MS updates.

Den, we cannot advise you on a fix until you learn the IP address of the router.

In Win 7..
Do not type in the " characters in the text below.

Click the START button.

Type " cmd " into the search box ( where it says Search programs and files ) and press enter.

Wait until a black box opens and shows a flashing cursor. next to the cursor type " tracert www.bbc.co.uk " and press enter

Allow the command to run and the new line beginning with 1 ends with the router's IP address >> Mine reads 1 2 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.254

Close the black box.

Now open a browser and type in the IP address and the router's management page should open.

Once you have done that we can tell you how to edit the Hosts file to use "home" to reach the router.

I agree, surely it's not that difficult to get a DOS prompt in Windows 7.
