Bullguard

I decided that I would give Bullguard internet security a try as it came top in the Which Report and on the say of my local and very good computer shop. I had problems getting it to install from the disk so I used one off a magazine and used my licence key. All is well on everything ie: Emails, tune up, firewall etc' but although I can access my emails it wont let me access the net via Internet explorer or Firefox etc'. I have turned the firewall off but it's not that so what the hell it can be has got ne beat for tonight. By the way this is being posted on my lap top using the same router (wireless). I can not even access the router from the desk top even though I can receive emails.   HELP

It sounds like your Bullguard IS is blocking those applications from accessing the internet i.e. IE and FF . Can you check Windows Firewall is off  otherwise you'll be running two firewalls. Secondly look here particularly the last section which allows you to configure applications so  that they can access the Internet.

Hi Steve, if I turn the real time virus off in the control panel I can access the net, defeats the object a bit. :slap:

It sounds like your web browser has been blocked, Den.  If you go into the Firewall settings in Bullguard, there should be an Applications list. If IE isn't listed as allowed, you should be able to somehow add it to the allowed applications.

I come up against Bullguard a lot professionally as I support a Java based conferencing system, in some configurations at least it works a little too well shall we say i.e. it can block everything it's unsure about but then again that is increasingly true of all of the products,

As Simon says if you allow the two browsers on the applications list it should allow them through.

I've not looked deeply into Bullguard I have to say as I'm not permitted at work to give configuration advice on security software.

Firefox, IE (both 32 & 64) and Safari are all enabled as is Outlook and I can receive emails.

Port 80 blocked possibly for some reason?

The advice from the above link is-

I cannot access the Internet unless I switch off BullGuard's firewall. How can I configure it to solve this?



Cause
The most likely cause is that network accessed has been blocked for the most common programs you use on the Internet.



Solution
1. Open BullGuard and go to the Firewall section > Overview tab.
2. Make sure there is no check mark in the box next to the "Block entire traffic (Panic switch)" option.
3. Select the Advanced user level and go to the Profiles tab.
4. Make sure the "Custom Security" profile is active and then double-click it.
5. Select the Application Rules tab from the window that appears and allow Internet access for all your legitimate programs.
6. Click OK in order to confirm the changes and close BullGuard's console.

I've tied turning off firewall and still he same. Only lets me through when I turn of  antivirus  :dunno:

I don't suppose there's any possibility that it's actually found a virus on your machine, and therefore is blocking Internet access?  It just seems odd that the antivirus should block it, instead of the firewall.

Contacted Bullguard, fat lot of good that did. Told me to uninstall, turn off Windows Firewall and reinstall. Same result.  :shake:

Sorry I have not responded on this for the last few days but my (new) computer crashed and I have had to reinstal W7 and everything else. Not really certain what was tha starting point of the fault but suspect it was when I had trouble with the WD software and not the antivirus at least not Bullguard. Avast had not fully uninstalled as I found bits still on there.
All seems to be fine now and running Bullguard but I have left off things such as System Mechanic etc' so I will see how it goes.  :fingers:

Steer well clear of the likes of system mechanic as they tend to cause more issues than they cure.

From here on in Windows 7 will not be getting much help, but from all the reports I've read it does not really need it anyway. I will let Bullguard run and cure problems and if that does not do it's job I will just run the AV side of it. I might and I mean MIGHT put CCleaner on but I don't even know if that is required.

To give the products the benefit of the doubt it is always best to install security software when the OS install is new 7and the registry is largly litter and corruption free.

I had an issue some time ago where I tried to upgrade Avast to version 5 from version 4 and it just didn't want to know.

The system was running sluggishly but in truth I couldn't be bothered to clean it up so ended up switching to Prevx.

I'm sure Avast would run fine now I've reformatted and renewed the Windows install but as I have a paid subscription for Prevx am sticking with it for the time being, as its effectively server based it also seems a better bet although I gather version 7 does this now also.

At the moment my computer is running so smoothly and very fast. Everything is starting up much quicker and I'm starting to think that there might have been something wrong from the start. Happy days.

TBH Den I've always found preloaded images to run slow which is why I like having a copy of the OS so can zap the image and load a fresh copy.

IME it tends to run quicker.

CCleaner is fine, what is a problem is installing and removing different AV products, some leave registry entries that cannot be removed, also they hook into the system so deeply getting rid of them completely is almost impossible, I think that's one piece of software that you should try and leave alone as much as possible, if it works leave it. Changing them to often can cause stability issues from past experience. Glad you got thing sorted though, Den.
