How do the BOFHs update multiple machines?

I only have two machines here but how can I avoid two lots of downloads?  I tend to be knocking on my limit each month anyway.

Corporates use Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) which runs on Windows Server.

This downloads one copy of the updates and allows the admins to control the roll out to the machines on the network.

However waiting for updates to download and install from this is still a painful experience at times.

Because of all the stuff that has to run when I log on at work it can take a good 15 minutes before I can actually start work.

Here's the official link to the archive, very funny reading.

I have found one answer.  It's a bit tedious but it works.

Please bear in mind that this is an XP luddite here  :)  On other versions your mileage may vary.
1. Open the security centre and click on "Check for latest updates from Windows Update".
2. Choose the "Custom" option.
3. Highlight and select the KB number at the end of each entry. (You might have to knock off the closing parenthesis after pasting this.)
4. Open another tab/window and go to the Windows Update Catalog.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166 will tell you all about it, and there is a link from there directly to the catalog.
5. Paste the KB reference into the search box then select the file appropriate to your setup.
6. When you've got all the bits you want, click on the "View Basket" underneath the search box.
7. Download !    (You did,of course, remember to create a directory to contain said bits - didn't you? )
8. Click on each download to install.

As I said - a bit tedious because you have to manually initiate each update.  But a least I now have a set of files to update the second computer.
I suppose it depends how much you value your time against limited bandwidth allowance.

p.s. all the above just goes to show what you can find out on a wet afternoon with nothing else to do  ;)

Well.. I only downloaded 12 files but some files contained multiple fixes.

Anybody else feeling deprived  - I can always pop round and break something for you. ;D ;D ;D
