Right, curiouser and curiouser, I just went to Windows Update again, and it didn't ask to install ActiveX, so I'm assuming I must have removed something else.  :nerves:

However, it said that 3 updates were hidden, which is correct, as I hid them last night, but when I clicked to restore and install the updates, I noticed these were different ones to the three that kept appearing before.  I probably just saw the .NET part and assumed they were the same three.  These seem to have installed, and according to my Update History, the troublesome updates also seem to have been installed:

QuoteWindows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2656407)  22 May 2012 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2604110)  22 May 2012 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2604092)  22 May 2012 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2487367)  22 May 2012 Automatic Updates
Windows Defender Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.127.390.0)  22 May 2012 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2518864)  21 May 2012 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2633880)  21 May 2012 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2572073)  21 May 2012 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 x86 (KB2656351)  21 May 2012 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2518864)  21 May 2012 Automatic Updates

So, if the bloody yellow shield appears again, with any of those, I'm just going to ignore them.  Life's too short to be sodding about with stuff like this.   :rant2:

Thanks Gary.  So, essentially, they're saying it's still broken.  ::)

This might have been the problem http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/05/23/windows_xp_dotnet_update_mess/

Just spotted it. Was wondering if you'd make it into the news. Probably would be the case the only claim to fame was breaking windows.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

Seems to have fixed it for me, no nagging to install already present updates no updates shown on the Windows Update page.

Simon

Right, so what was the actual fix?  I've still got the nagging yellow shield.  :bawl:

Maybe this  :dunno: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339 Click on reset windows updates and there is a magical MS fix it thingy.

I just removed that control and it seems to have fixed it.

If you can PM me or post a screengrab of your activex objects folder I can certainly advise you

Simon

Can do later.  I think there were only four.  One was the one that said it was 'Damaged', which I removed, I think one was Shockwave, and the others didn't relate to Windows Update.

Gary, if that's the same 'Fixit' that I found before, it seems to work initially, then the update shield comes back after a cold boot.  :bawl:  But, again, I'll have a look later.  :)

May well be, I'm sure MS are working on this, but then again maybe they are hoping it will push XP users to rip their hair out and update to a later version  ;) Not 7 though as I think Ballmer called Aero Glass 'dated and cheesy'  ::)

What then?  8 looks sh*t!  :ack:  If anything, that will push people towards Macs.

Ballmer was always a nutter, 7 looks fine to me. * is a big gamble for Microsoft, I'm not sure how people are going to react to it on new machines. I still think MS should have had a distinctly separate but compatible OS for tablets rather than the mess that 8 appears to be.

It was actually some guy called Jensen Harris that said that http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/05/21/windows_8_aero_dead/

Time for Ballmer to go and Gates to do a Jobs style comeback?

PS, have you seen the videos of Balmer? I don't think he comes across as a sane person in a single one. :P At least Jobs and Gates had sense, even if they were somewhat megalomaniacs at times.

Just been playing about with our test PC at work that is now running Win 8, I hate it!!!!

Technical Ben

I'd not even waste the resources on testing it till MS offer a Metro free version (IE, Windows 7 SP3 as it looks like without Metro :P).

Trouble is Ben, I have to be ready for when people call up running it, I'd be fired if I said 'what are you running that for?!"

I've been ignoring these for a long time! I now have a PC that has a blue screen and a registry that is corrupt/does not exist  Using son's laptop while the other son fixes my poorly PC  ;)

pctech

Since I removed that control I've not had the problem nor have the problems reappeared.

However as I also have Office installed I installed the  Microsoft Update control which monitors all MS products, are you using this or just Windows Update?

J!ll

I'm using Windows updates.

I have Office 2003 - how would I know if I have Microsoft Updates instead of Windows Updates?
