Windows Updates Nightmare

Computers are a pain in the .........  :laugh:

The site looks a bit different, try going to http://update.microsoft.com (only works via IE) and it'll check for the software and prompt you to install it if its missing.

Used to use that but still had problems with it trying to install something that would never complete  :slap:

I think the control I removed related to Win update rather than MS update but it did do the trick in my case.

The fact that loads of people have reported the same issue seems to indicate that one of the updates has borked the update system somehow.

Yes, Win update just monitors the OS whereas installing MS Update upgrades the auto update system to monitor all installed Microsoft products.

If I go to Windows Update, via IE, it goes to the Microsoft Update site, but I'm not aware of having installed anything.

You do have Microsoft Update installed by the sounds of it then but where the software component is stored other than SoftwareDistribution I don't know as Microsoft being Microsoft don't document such things even for those that are Microsoft Certified Professionals.
