Hi all,

I have been with IDNet for a couple of years now but have had some issues over the past 6 months with speed dropping from the normal 3.5-4 meg to about 512k which does not improve unless the router is rebooted. The speed generally drops within 12 hours of the router being rebooted and occurs everyday. The router is a NETGEAR N300 Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router (DGN2200) and was purchased to replace a DG834G in an attempt to remedy this problem.

This issue occurs on all machines, both wired and wireless, and has been ongoing since around the turn of the year.

The above screenshot is typical of the speed when it drops.

The above screenshot is typical of normal speed subsequent to rebooting the router.

Stats as follows:

ADSL Link         Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4000 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 30.0 db         16.0 db
Noise Margin         19.8 db         22.0 db

What AV software do you use? Some distort speed test results. Have you performed a BT test? Knowing your profile would be helpful.

I use NOD32 on all of the Windows machines in the house. The Macs are not using any AV. The speedtest results are not distorted, the slowdown is easily noticeable during normal web browsing - it's like going back a few years to when I first got ntl!

I will run another BT test now and post it.

As per the instructions AV was disabled, router rebooted prior to test etc.

Thanks

I'm assuming adslmax? with the upstream @448kps , the IP profile of 3500 is correct for your sync at 4K. However your downstream att indicates you should be syncing downstream at around 8k. Your downstream margin is elevated  at 19.8 as shown by the router, the BT DLM has probably been set at 15 downstream. The usual reason for this is noise or interference affecting the broadband line. You need to go through checks on your side of the master socket to see if the fault is on your side ie change filters, unplug sky box, spare router etc. I would also if you can get some router stats from the test socket immediately on connection.

Thanks for your reply Steve.

The package is Home PAYG (WBC ADSL MAX).

I have switched out the filter, used three different (two brand new) routers and the Sky box is not connected. I will run some tests on the master socket when I have chance - is this likely an issue with the line into the house? There is only one neighbour and he is getting 14mbit/s on his ADSL connection, although I'm uncertain of the package.

Rik

It could be the line into the house, it could be the internal wiring. Using the test socket is a protective diagnostic, if it is bad there, it's aBT fault.
