Hi,last week, last night and this morning,I noticed that one of the lights were out the front of my router[Netgear DGN1000] and when I logged into the router, the firmware checker said that it could not search for updates as there was no internet connection. On the "connection status"it gave the indication that the router was indeed not connected but what I cannot understand is how was it that I was able to connect to web pages?in fact the pages seemed to load much quicker than normal.also my download speed was normal.I was tempted just to leave it as it was but I manually re-connected the router after about 20 minutes. If anyone could explain this to me I would be very grateful.

If you can browse the Internet and check the download speed then it has to be connected. It is possible to view previously cached pages without a connection but the speed test would not have been possible. Could be a software bug in the router firmware I guess.

Hi

I have the same router, and I have recently experienced exactly the same (i.e, I noticed one of the lights had disappeared).  It hasn't come back on since (to my knowledge), and the internet seems to work fine without it (not sure of the purpose of the light, then!).  However, I have noticed one or two disconnections lately (last night after 11pm the connection kept dropping, and the same has happened a few times within the last few weeks, always seemingly at night).  However, I haven't a clue how to check firmware or whatever, or to check what the problem might be (if there even is one) and don't even know how to log in to the router, I'm ashamed to say. :red:

Should I do what you've done Christopher, and manually reconnect, even though by and large the internet is working for the most part?  And how do I do that....do you just mean pulling the lead out of the back of the router?  Sorry for my naivety.

Moonshine.

Rik

If you lose connection in the midnight to 2am slot, up to about 6am, there's a good chance it's BT engineering works.

Thank you Steve and Rik for replies

Moonshine, sorry but I am as clueless as you,I sent 3 emails to support about this but they are not replying for some reason.

FOI my router still reckons it has no internet connection, funny init?

IDNet haven't had any emails from the address you've registered here, and don't recognise the issue. Email again to support@idnet.com, mark the subject line as FAO; Brian. He's aware of your problem. Your line is stable from 9-5 daily, then becomes unstable outside those hours, suggesting local interference.

Sorry Rik not sure what you mean,I have been using a hotmail address which has been registered on my idnet broadband account for about 2 months now,I had no probs with it  when I had to email support a few weeks ago and I used the address support@idnet.com then as I did yesterday.
When you say "address you've registered here"do you mean the forum? if so surely the email I use for that for that has nothing to do with the email address I have registered with IDNet

Sorry to sound thick mate but I aint no youngster and like you have a very severe heart condition which I guess leaves me a bit "slow" at times

Rik would have only known the email address you have registered on the forum, Christopher, so would have used that when making enquiries to IDNet.  There must be some other reason why they haven't received your hotmail emails, if indeed, that is the case.   Your forum email address is not connected to your IDNet account.

NP, you should see me on a good day. The thing is now that Brian knows about your problem and has had a quick look at your line (we identify you to IDNet by your IP address, so no personal data is used). If you email Brian he knows the history and what to look for.

Hi

My missing light is still missing!  However, the internet is working, and I'm usually a great believer in the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".  In anyone's opinion on here, do I need to bother to do anything about it?  It doesn't bother me as long as I have internet access, but when I read Christopher's almost identical problem, it compelled me to write.  I wouldn't have bothered otherwise.

I'm tempted to leave well alone (particularly since I have no clue regards to routers and computers).  Anyone think I need to do anything, is it something I should be concerned about, or should I just forget about it?  By the way, the missing light is a circle symbol looking a bit like the planet Saturn (not sure how else to describe it!!).  It's the last light on the right hand side before the Wifi on/off light.  The light was permanently on up until about a week ago.....?!!!!  :dunno:

Many thanks Netters.

Hi Rik

I seem to be losing connection just after 11pm each night, as opposed to midnight.  The lights on my router flash off then come back on again, and this can continue for quite some time (on/off/on/off), so I can only briefly view web pages before the lights disappear again, and connection is lost (this has been happening as recently as a few minutes ago), and I have to be really speedy to send an email or post a message whilst the lights are on, before they disappear again and connection is lost!  Is this also likely to be BT, or could it be other issues?

Is this related to my other issue of the solid light having disappeared from my router (as with Christopher's case) about a week ago?

Many thanks

Moonshine.

if you have had your router for a while then the routers light has probably just failed

No, that's a problem between the router and the exchange. Can you borrow another router to try?

Hi

Thanks for the replies.  Had the router for about 18 months I think.  Not got another I can borrow, really.  However, it seems to be playing ball at the  moment (fingers crossed).

I emailed support and Brian has said the router is losing connection intermittently.  They have set a new profile or something to see if that works, and have asked me to monitor it for a few days.  Oddly enough, all my lights are now back, too!!  :)

Well, I spoke too soon, my internet connection keeps dropping sadly, so it's happening during the day as well now.  :'(

IDNet are going to send me a test router to see if it's anything to do with my router (although that's fairly new, so I'm not sure it's that).  Otherwise, it might be a hefty BT bill for me if they have to send an engineer around.  :(

I just don't understand how things can suddenly go so wrong when I've changed nothing.  Then again, I guess that's the world of the internet.  I wish I understood more.....

Brian is always very nice and considerate of my stupidity when it comes to computers, thank goodness!

Moonshine.

I had internet when I went off line one evening, I didn't have it the next morning, nor until a BT engineer had sorted out my internal wiring. Things go out of spec, and, in the case of routers, newness doesn't equal reliability I'm afraid. :(

I guess if it can happen to yourself, someone who knows a fair deal about computers and the internet, it can happen to anyone!  I'll monitor the test router and see what happens from thereon in.  Thanks for the response.

Just a quick update....

My test router arrived from IDNet last Friday, as promised.  However, I didn't even need to take it out of the box, since my connection has not dropped at all since then (fingers crossed it stays that way!), so sent test router back.  Not sure what the problem was to be honest.  All my lights are back to normal on my router (including the strange 'missing' light), and have been since Thursday night, so I don't think the issue was the router.  Brian informed me that prior to sending the router, there was no fault showing on the line, so who knows???  It's a mystery to me, but I'm just happy it's resolved itself, to be honest.  I've now put a spell on my router so that its lights never disappear again....!!!!!

Thanks to all who tried to assist.
