Hi all,
I have been playing a game with my girlfriend for almsot 2 years, but these past couple of weeks she cant stay connected for more than a moment or so. I did update to ADSL2, but dont think that would cause problems ? in fact my ping seems better than hers.

hers.

Saying that, it dont seem to be working for me at all right now  :dunno:

She is on sky, Though has anyone any ideas why its been working fine for 2 years then for no reason its just not keeping us connected anymore ? neither of us seem to have any problems with the internet in general, so can't understand why the game just started to diconnect for no reason. We both have the same routers, and the firewall settings are all correct and our LAN address is all the same and all correct, so not sure whats going on. anyone any ideas ?

Niall

Is it an online game? If so have you tried to see if you can do a tracert to it? It's normally peering issues with online gaming when this happens. If you can find that out first, then maybe look at the support forums for the game you're playing. If it's just a peer to peer game, then it might be firewall related.

Actually, I noticed you said it's not working at all now. Is that her/your connection, or the game? (I'm off to bed, I'm sure someone will answer this!)

its a old game from 2004 ;) I host the game on my pc and she just connects over the net to my IP address. Its looking like she has some issue somewhere with her pc to the router as the ping time seems very unstable and its a wired LAN..... theres another pc on same network so will try that 2moz....

It seems my wires lan has a pin gof <1ms though on my girlfriends pc & router, 2 pcs are >10ms and even tried a wireless and thats the same. its a ping to the router, so 3 pcs cant be all faulty, it cant be the internet, so can only assume there is some problem with the router ? AFAIK there should be any delays as such on a wireled lan at least ? One pc is right next to the router so only 1M or so of cable, so must be something up with the router ?!

I presume you have tried rebooting the router?

What happens if you play on your local Lan?

Checking if there is any packet loss would be advisable. Some games cannot really cope with much. :)
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

Yeah, The game locks up if the sever "vanishes" but there is 99% of the time zero packet loss, it just drops out for no reason.

I'm going to try this tomorrow, my girlfriend lives 40miles away, hence playing over the internet ;)

We both rebooted the router, sometimes the router just decides to stop random ports or sites from working, very strange, but its not done that for a long time.

I'm actually starting to wonder if its the power supply in her pc as she seems to have problems with the the USB ports, assuming LAN and USB is on the same bus, then either power supply or motherboard has given up, its a dual core pc, but the board is a few years old now along with the psu, so plan to investigate the psu tomorrow.

Wired or wireless, I would expect a ping of less than 5ms to the router, and normally less than 2ms. If it is regularly over 10ms then I would be trying an alternative router.

She has the same router as me, though my pc is right next to the router, hers goes via about 10M or so of lan cable, though her pc has the fastest time, even over the other pc which is next to her router, though in both cases my pc is constant <1ms. I guess I will just have to look into the router as her laptop has a 10ms - 20ms time, though it is wireless, her wired pc is random between about 2ms and 5ms at the moment. So its hard to say if its the router or not.

Seems the sound card was causing the internet faults & the USB ports to malfunction, assume as everything is mashed into the same PCI bus... very odd set of faults indeed! Router now showing a constant <1ms too  8-)

Don't use pingtest - the results can be impacted by too many other things - much better just to use command prompt. You'll see from the three pingtests you've posted above three different servers have been used so they are not comparable to one another.
