I just got a Samsung Galaxy 7.7 tablet running Android 3.2 and tried to set up my IDNet IMAP e-mail account on it, but keep getting a 'connection error' message, so none of the account has loaded nor has the one test message I composed left the outbox.

I copied all the settings from my Outlook Express account, which uses my own domain name after @ in the e-mail address. So on the tablet I used that as the e-mail address and my actual idnet.com address as my user name. I also used the correct imap.idnet.com and smtp.idnet.com settings using port 143.

The one box I didn't fill in is security, which is set to 'none' - is that the problem?  Or should I have used @idnet.com as the e-mail address and the @domain name address as my user name?  Or is something else the problem?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Where is your domain actually hosted?

Port 143 with imap.idnet.com is right. To use SMTP you will need to ensure the security is set with your username and password, SSL off on port 587. SMTP will work on your home PC and wifi network as the authentication is done at idnet's end by ip address but if you are out and about you have to authenticate with the smtp server so it knows you are allowed to use it to send email.

Domain City hosts it.

I was using my own router when trying to set up the account, so authentication shouldn't be the problem.  And IDNet confirmed I'm using the right settings.  One thing:  right now the 'Require sign-in' box is ticked, but I don't see any way to sign in. could that be it?

I just unticked the 'require sign-in' and the account loaded fine.  I can't see any way to sign in in any case!
