Good stuff, sounds like it was registry corruption to me.

Now having had to spend hours getting my machine back to it original state, though I have lost data such as emails, what can I do to save every bit of my date, including things like email account data? I use Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox.

As Glenn says, if Thunderbird holds mail in a database (I use Outlook 2010 for my mail so apologies I don't know much about Thunderbird) then the best thing to do is back that up regularly in future.

Thunderbird keeps it's data at:-

C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\NNNNNN.default

on Windows 7 and is a doddle to back up. The path for XP isn't that different either.

Thanks JB, is it sufficient simply copy to another disc, then copy back when you need to restore it?

Yes, that's what I do. I move between UK and Spain and have Thunderbird installed on two machines. I just copy the profile folder with it's files and sub directories from one machine to the other. It means that any extensions move at the same time. I actually zip the folder but that is just for transport convenience.

I do the same with Firefox which has it's data directory at :- C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\nnnnnnn.default
on my machines with Win 7.
