Anyone any idea why my pop3 should cease to work over the last day although I can access my account via webmail and the current setting have worked for months.

Outlook Express error message as follows:

The server responded with an error. Account: 'pop3.idnet.net', Server: 'pop3.idnet.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

I have tried creating a new account in OE and also turned off AVG antivirus scanning with no success.

This is one of those issues where you probably need to talk to support, or drop them an email, as we can only deal in generalities.

However, it does look to me as if AVG is setting up a proxy server to handle mail, so the issue may be between you and AVG rather than you and IDNet. When you disabled AVG, did you also disable its email activity, or just the realtime scanner?

I can confirm that POP3 is working fine for me.

I unticked the AVG "check incoming mail" and "check outgoing mail" box but the AVG popup still pops up "connecting to 198.18.1.2"

I don't use AVG, Phil, but I suspect that may be where the problem is arising. Is there any way to switch it off?

Had some trouble with this. I decided to uninstal AVG (after disconnecting from internet). XP then locked up 3 times when trying to reboot. Then took ages to boot to safe mode and ages again to go back to a restore point.

POP3 then worked, reinstalled AVG, ZoneAlarm then requested permission for AVG to access internet, POP3 still OK.

Only thing I can think of is that AVG program must have changed so Zone Alarm blocked it without me noticing the "allow access" question.

So all Ok now and thanks for your input

Rik

Glad you're sorted, Phil. :) Pesky software!
