A friend of mine (he's not using IDNet as his ISP)  is having problems accessing the web.  Some websites, such as Tesco.com, are not allowing him access.   I had a look at his machine, and all the settings seem ok, he has AVG spyware installed and no viruses.  Any suggestions on what might be the problem, and how to fix it, would be gratefully received - and I'll get brownie points for coming up with an answer! :D

It sounds like it could be a DNS problem, possibly specific to his ISP. What happens if he types http://212.140.189.10/ in the browser address bar? If it comes up with the Tesco website, it is a DNS issue. I'm not sure if he will be able to do anything to sort it though, it may just be a case of waiting for his ISP to sort it.

Of course, he could always come over to IDNet!

Let us know whether or not the ip address works or not, and I'm sure someone will be able to offer more suggestions.

The other possibility, Lance, is an MTU issue.

Hello again, and many thanks for the quick response.  I tried the http://212.140.189.10/ suggestion, but the website failed to appear.  I read something about the MTU on another forum, but I don't want to start messing around too deeply in his machine in case I make matters worse!  Thanks again for replying.

Providing you make a note of the initial MTU/RWIN, you can't do any harm - you can simply revert to those settings.

Check the instructions, and links, here.

Thanks again. I may just give it a go!

Just to update on this: the problem seems to have been his router. He got a new one and can now access everything.  Many thanks again for the offers of help.

Rik

Our pleasure, glad he's sorted. :)
