2Mb cap on MaxDsl

Im hoping this forum may help as IdNet support seem to be struggling to resolve my problem. 52 days on MaxDsl at Idnet, 13 days at 6mb, 39 days capped at 2mb.

According to IdNet support my line has been capped at 2mb for the past 32 days because BT Wholesale report multiple line sync drops which no one else can see, not even IdNet I am told. After nearly daily phone calls to support, a complete renewal of all my equipment ie: router/computer/filter/cables, 2 BT engineer visits, a line change from exchange to premises and many promises of cap removal I am still on 2mb broadband.

I can run flat out on 2mb at 1865kbps 24/7, indeed for the 13 days at 6mb I averaged 5500kbps 24/7, over the past 6 days my router logs show no sync drops at all, my stats remain static at 30/30db Nm, 20/10.5db power and 20/12db attenuation. IdNet also reported no sync drops but tell me BTw still insist multiple sync drops seen (1000 in 24hrs) so reluctant to remove 2mb cap.

I get the impression from IdNets waining support that after 32 days they are fed up with this problem, perhaps a fresh set of eyes from this forum have sensible suggestions or encountered similiar problems.

Have I already responded to you, under another name, on ThinkBroadband?

If so, there is little I can add to what I have already said there.

Edit: ThinkBroadband thread is here.

Mmm,I read some of that over at TB.....attacking the ISP for what is patently a line and BT issue is somewhat disingenuous.

To quote you BTw still insist multiple sync drops seen (1000 in 24hrs) so reluctant to remove 2mb cap. So BTW is the issue here and no iSP can force them to do anything.

It is odd that on the same day I read another similar though now resolved issue over at ISPreview

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/showthread.php?t=24445

What you/we need is the inside track to Kits's BT friend.

MoHux

Is your Noise Margin really 30/30db??  Or have I read you wrong?
Surely with your low attenuation, that high a figure is normally associated with a fixed line.

I would expect that lowering it to around 7/8db would be enough to return you to Max speeds.  So perhaps this is what you should push for?

Thanks for your replies

Yes my thought have been aired on Thinkbroadband and yes Rik your replies were received.

As for my comments on IdNet, if you paid for a new computer and did not receive it, would you complain ?. Whilst I suspect BTw to be the culprit this cannot be verified, BTw are untouchable by the general public, I have tried, after 32 days of asking Idnet support for help their enthusiasm for resolution does seems to be disappearing as fast as my frustration is growing.

The only course the end user can take for rectification of broadband problems is through the ISP, we are totally reliant on the ISP for requesting suppliers such as BTw to act on a fault, unfortunately BTw are totally out of reach of the general public, and I know that repeated request for service does wear anyone down.

As for an inside track to Kits Bt friend, I know that a very nice mature young lady at IdNet has already proved that she can get action swiftly from BTw.

MoHux my NM really is 30/30db, I would welcome any reduction but IdNet and the BT engineers seem unconcerned at these figures.

DorsetBoy

Well there is something very odd/wrong about those figures especially given your distance to exchange.

Can you please supply the following information,in full.

Make and model of router.Firmware edition.

Full router stats,everything it gives.

The full results of a BT speedtest  www.speedtester.bt.com

Sadly you are not alone,BT seem to be having a competition amongst themselves to see how big a mess they can make each week.
My own line, fault free, they suddenly decided needed to have the snr increased to 15db and interleaving turned on.CS tell them to turn off i/leaving and reduce snr back to 9db and what do they do?
Increase the snr to 19 db! [They stilll insist that they were requested to do these things] ::)
3 attempts later it is corrected.
My neighbour ordered Max adsl with a migration, comes back from a short break expecting his new service only to find no adsl at all.The new ISP investigate and BT inform them "The customer requested a cease of adsl on that line"......they don't seem to know what a MAC code is.

As for my comments on IdNet

As Simon is in contact with you, there's little more that anyone here can do.

Sorry to hear about your past problems, BT are a law unto themselves it seems, unfortunately our only way to them is through the ISP.

Rik, Do I detect from your reply that my posts may have hit a raw nerve.

Rik

No, they haven't hit a raw nerve, but this doesn't appear to be an issue we can resolve user-to-user. If Simon's involved, there's little point in members trying to find a solution.

That said, you don't appear to be on a Max connection, but a fixed-rate 2Mbps one. (Your u/s sync speed indicates this.) Were you told that your line was being switched?

That is exactly what I was thinking, the figures do not add up to a Max connection.
Something has made BT take action here but what we can't know,I think you will have to trust Simon to do his stuff with this one,do let us know what the outcome is.

Thanks to Rik and DorsetBoy for the posts

The position at present is

According to the router log my connection was dropped at 16.30hrs today and restarted at 7008/448kbps with my noise margin dropping from 30db down to 12.5db.
Before getting to excited, on checking my profile this was still at 2000kbps with a throughput of 1840kbps, this may mean a 10 day training period to reset my MSR but could also mean a stuck bRAS profile which would require further intervention.

Should any of you have read the latest Simon_IdNet post on ThinkB he does say that my line stability issue has been resolved, I was told it is more that the instability has disappeared and the cause has not been established, which means to me it could reappear at any time.
Should I have been misinformed I would welcome new information on the cause of the stability problem.

Anyway I thank Simon_IdNet for his efforts on my behalf and will keep the forum updated on progress of my MaxDsl stability.

DorsetBoy

OK,that drop would have been when they lifted the cap/put you back on Max.
The 12db snr looks much better and it will take @ 3 full days to see the profile rise.

I suspect they switched the exchange pair to eliminate the problem, means you get a working line and they don't have to look for a fault.

Hope the stats settle for you now, good luck.

Rik

Hi Rural

Like Dorset, I think BT have done a 'lift and shift' to create a new connection for you and thus eliminate the exchange equipment from the equation. Hopefully, that will fix the stability. At the same time, I believe you have been moved back to Max from a fixed-rate service, hence the change in noise margin and sync speed (note the u/s sync has moved back to 448).

Your profile should follow over the next few days.
