Internet Connection Dropping

Back in May last year I upgraded to ADSL2+. My speed went from a typical 6mps to around 12 mps and all was well for 7 – 10 days. Then the connection started to drop out occasionally for perhaps a minute or so and sometimes longer.

Knowing I was using an old suspect telephone extension wire I bought a TP Link wireless modem/router and moved completely to wireless. This did not solve the problem so I reverted to my original Netgear wired system. Again it was OK for 7 – 10 days then the dropouts started as before.

I am computer literate but have not dug in to any router logs as I would not know what to look for. This affects all our computers so it is not a fault with any particular PC. I have tried plugging directly into the BT socket by the way.

Has anyone else experienced issues after upgrading, if so is it possible to revert back to the slower speed? A stable connection is more important than speed although obviously faster is better when I do download programs, iPlayer etc.

I am considering moving to Virgin cable if I can't resolve this.

It's most likely interference from somewhere however finding it is never easy, adsl2+ is more sensitive to interference due to use of higher frequencies to carry the signal,it depends how keen you are to investigate further but it sounds like you've tried the test socket with no success. You can have an adsl2+ line re profiled back to the equivalent of the old adslmax which should hopefully restore some stability- speak to support.

Get a copy of Router Stats Lite   http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm#routerstatslite

Install and run it for 24 hours with 30 second sampling and producing a graph that shows Downstream Sync Speed and SNR.       Post the image and then it might be possible to comment further
